When Maggie Kang stepped up to accept the Oscar for Best Animated Feature on Sunday night, she had something to say, and nobody in the Dolby Theatre was going to forget it.
"For those of you who look like me," the co-director of Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters said, pausing through tears, "I'm so sorry that it took us so long to see us in a movie like this. But it is here. And that means the next generation don't have to go longing. This is for Korea and for Koreans everywhere."
The moment came seconds after KPop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Feature at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15, making Kang and producer Michelle Wong the first people of South Korean descent to ever win in the category.
The win capped a dominant awards season for the Sony Pictures Animation film, which had already taken home Best Animated Feature at both the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards. Time magazine named it its 2025 Breakthrough of the Year long before Oscar night arrived.
The film follows Huntrix, a K-pop girl group whose members lead double lives as demon hunters, battling a rival boy band whose members are secretly demons. Kang developed the story from her own Korean heritage, drawing on mythology, demonology and K-pop culture to build a world that became an international phenomenon, and a genuine cultural touchstone for Korean and Korean-American audiences worldwide.
The film's real-life vocalists: Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami and EJAE, who voice the animated trio HUNTR/X, performed the film's hit song "Golden" live at the Oscars tonight, arriving on the red carpet in matching golden ensembles. The song is also nominated for Best Original Song at tonight's ceremony. A sequel has already been confirmed by Netflix and Sony.
KPop Demon Hunters beat out Arco, Elio, Little Amélie or the Character of Rain and Zootopia 2 for the prize.
The 98th Academy Awards are airing live Sunday, March 15, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ABC and Hulu.
