On Friday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Chicago Bears were not in a position to swing a trade for Maxx Crosby, primarily because of their financial limitations.
In case you missed it, this is what Schefty had to say: “The Bears don’t have any more money right now. They’re broke. They’re out of money. I know people love all this and coming up with concoctions, and imaginations, and scenarios where a team like the Bears can come up with a player like Maxx Crosby. Sorry to be a party pooper. The Bears don’t have the type of money to make a move like that right now. They just cannot afford it.”
The good news is that my initial read on that take was incorrect. I had assumed that Schefter meant the Bears literally couldn’t afford that type of move. As in, didn’t have the cash to swing it. But as it turns out, some of the alternative opinions (which contended even at the time that he was referring only to cap space and NOT available dollars in the bank) were correct. I think Schefter phrased it poorly, but in retrospect, I can see my whiff.
And in any case, on Saturday, ESPN 1000’s David Kaplan clarified.
So there is an uproar after Adam Schefter said the Bears are broke. Relax. After making calls here’s the scoop. That was in reference to salary cap situation. They have whatever they need financially if Poles wants to make a move. We will discuss on @ESPN1000 Monday at 6 a.m.
— David Kaplan (@thekapman) March 14, 2026The bad news is that I got that wrong. And I am sorry for that. I wish that would never happen, but this time, it did. The good news is that this means the Bears should be able to do what they need or want to do with proper contract restructuring as applicable.
Are the Chicago Bears broke? I Suppose Not
Do I still wish Schefter, himself, had been the one walking back/clarifying his statement? Absolutely. Hearing it straight from the horse’s mouth would be better. Instead, you could see how someone might frame Kaplan’s update as carrying water for management/ownership. I don’t believe that, but you could see it.
Indeed, I still can’t shake the feeling that there’s still a larger issue here, tangential to Schefter’s report. Because if the Bears wanted to make that particular move for Crosby (or anything similar), they could alleviate their cap problems pretty easily.
Chicago’s football team currently sits with $1,189,999 under the 2026 NFL salary cap. However, the team is also in the red (by $3,483,879) in terms of effective cap space — a number that measures cap space while accounting for the cost of a team’s upcoming draft class. In other words, the Bears will need to create some room under the cap just to sign their draft class. And if it wants to make an unexpected big splash, more will need to be done.
Before the ball got rolling this offseason, Bleacher Nation’s Patrick K. Flowers offered up some paths for the Bears to create cap space for a big move. For instance, the Bears can clear up nearly $25 million with basic contract restructures for offensive lineman Joe Thuney, tight end Cole Kmet, and cornerback Kyler Gordon. In this scenario, the Bears would go from just $2,152,485 under to $27,088,485. Of course, it takes a little more than button-smashing to make something like this happen. But it is a path for the front office.
That they haven’t already done so concerns me because it makes it look like the team is either OK with the current state of the defensive line or is preparing to put all of its eggs in the NFL Draft basket to fill its biggest need. Maybe they will still find a way to clear cap space to make necessary moves for improvement. But it remains to be seen how and when it will happen. Stay tuned.
