How Gautam Gambhir’s own IPL struggles helped Abhishek Sharma amid awful form at T20 World Cup

‘Not out of form but out of runs’ – that is the phrase that the Indian head coach and captain have used now to refer to a batter who has failed to score for sometime. Suryakumar Yadav said the line about himself when he had a horrible 2025, a year in which he didn’t even manage to hit a single T20I fifty. Now, Gautam Gambhir has shared the same point of view for Abhishek Sharma, who had a subpar T20 World Cup 2026.

In what was supposed to be a groundbreaking T20 World Cup, his first, for Abhishek, things went south for the superstar. He lit up the T20Is with an incredible run of form, smashing runs in every part of the globe. But then, just when the tournament arrived, Abhishek fell ill. He couldn’t even stand properly and yet he played the opening game against the USA, managing a duck. He missed the next game and by then, the form bid him adieu.

He made three ducks in a row in the group stages before making a scratchy 15 against South Africa. A fifty came against Zimbabwe but almost every batter scored runs on that wicket. Two more failures ensued in must-win games before Abhishek finally showed what he can do. In the night of the final, Abhishek had a tremendous outing, smashing a 21-ball 52 and repaying the faith shown by the management in him. The team backed him throughout the tournament and he showed up in the final alongside Sanju Samson, who proved to be the Player of the Tournament.

Gambhir breaks silence on Abhishek’s form

Now, Gautam Gambhir has shed light on what the management and the entire team thought when Abhishek was going through the toughest patch of his career so far. Gambhir likened it to what he experienced during his playing days. While speaking on JioStar’s ‘Follow the Blues’, Gambhir alluded to a similar season he had as a batter for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) back in IPL 2014.

Despite scoring 406 runs in the season prior, Gambhir had a horrible start to IPL 2014. He also made three consecutive ducks before scoring just one run in the fourth game. But then, he didn’t beg down and came back strongly to hammer 237 runs at an average of almost 60 in his next five matches. So, Gambhir has been there, done that. No one would know better than him as how a batter would feel.

Catch what Gambhir had to say about Sanju Samson here.

“I’ve had a worse experience than him in 2014 during the IPL, when I got three ducks in a row and then another in the fourth game as well. All I told him was that people will look at your scores and will talk about your form, but actually you are not out of form; you are just out of runs. The only time you can judge your form is when you have played 20 to 30 balls in the middle, and he hasn’t even faced 20 balls yet.

Gambhir had enough faith in Abhishek’s abilities. Instead of making him worry about his form, the World Cup and Champions Trophy-winning head coach asked Abhishek to be more aggressive. He divulged that the entire dressing room was behind Abhishek.

All I wanted him to do was go out there in the next game and be even more aggressive compared to what he was in the previous game. If you want to hit the first ball out of the ground, go and do it, and commit yourself to it 100 per cent because it really doesn’t matter what the world thinks about you. All that matters is what those 30 people in the dressing room think about you, and that is exactly what should matter to all the boys. There was no doubt whatsoever about Abhishek. For anyone, to be honest, in that dressing room, we always had faith and trust in everyone who was selected to represent the country in the T20 World Cup.”
