The Vegas Golden Knights haven’t been great recently. They’re a notoriously slow starting team. And yet they completely overwhelmed the Blackhawks right out of the gate. So much so that Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill took his timeout to wake his team up after the home team scored their third goal at the 12 minute mark into the first period. Just a terrible opening 20 minutes from the Hawks.
The Blackhawks came out of the room and did push back in the second period. The Hawks were the most aggressive team in the first half of the middle stanza but couldn’t put a puck in the net. Of course the first time the Blackhawks were short-handed in the period, Vegas scored the next goal to push their lead to four. The Hawks’ special teams weren’t good, and they took a four-goal deficit to the room after 40 minutes.
Some of the bad habits we saw when the Blackhawks seemingly couldn’t get the puck out of their defensive zone for a few weeks earlier this year reappeared. There was a lot of passing and skating without much success, especially after the would-be first goal for the Blackhawks was taken off the board by a video review.
Star 1: Connor Bedard
In a game in which the Blackhawks were doing a little bit of everything except generate offense, Bedard was still pushing. At the end of two periods, Bedard had a team-high four shot attempts and was tied for the team lead with two individual scoring chances. He also won 8 of 11 faceoffs while skating 14:32 of the first 40 minutes of the game. We got another serving of physical, chippy Bedard tonight, too.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) March 15, 2026Star 2: Artyom Levshunov
Levshunov continues to show a more effectively physical game, and he’s been better for it. He skated a team-leading 15:44 by the end of the second period and was tied for the team lead with three hits. Levshunov would have scored the Blackhawks’ first goal 49 seconds into the third period… but Vegas successfully challenged there was an uncalled hand pass before the score (there was, no goal). He led the Blackhawks with three blocked shots and four hits in the game.
Star 3: Frank Nazar
It was admittedly slim pickings tonight, but when the Blackhawks did have some juice in the second period it was from Nazar’s line. He won 11 of a team-high 18 faceoffs in the game and did a nice job on the penalty kill.
Key Takeaways
Ilya Mikheyev was hit in the left knee by a shot by the side of the Vegas net late in the first period and went straight to the room in pain. The good news: he returned to start the second period. Another nice night from Andrew Mangiapane. He finished the night with a team-high four individual scoring chances and a team-leading two high danger chances Coming in with the top PK unit in the NHL, tonight’s performance was surprisingly bad for that group. The Blackhawks’ first penalty kill lasted 11 seconds before Vegas scored the first goal of the night. The Blackhawks’ second penalty kill lasted 40 seconds before Vegas scored their fourth goal of the night. The last time the Hawks allowed more than one power play goal in a game: Dec. 7 against Anaheim. The Blackhawks got the game’s first power play and it really didn’t generate anything until the final 15 seconds or so, during which they got a couple really good looks. Their other advantages weren’t a whole lot better; the Hawks finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play. After Kaedan Korczak and Bedard got into a shoving match at the end of the first period (that start with Bedard taking a couple high shots from Korczak’s stick), the second period was chippy.Connor Bedard and Kaedan Korczak getting chippy pic.twitter.com/VB1KcAGJkj
