Softball rolls past Samford in midweek matchup, remaining unbeaten

Alabama took care of business, shutting Samford down 8-1 on Tuesday. This big win was a refreshing turnaround from a sloppy 2-1 win over Ole Miss to close out the weekend series on Sunday.

Team 30 now has 24 straight wins, only nine shy of the record set in 2019.

Midweek matches can end up being the Achilles heel to a team like this. What should be an easy rebound game can wind up with an upset, and at the beginning of this game, it was looking that way.

The Team 30 magic had seemingly worn off with a stagnant first few and a lot of runners being left stranded.

With things looking sour for the Crimson Tide, infielder Brooke Wells stepped up to the plate.

Outfielder Audrey Vandagriff was already primed to steal another base when the pitch was thrown. The crack of the bat echoed throughout Rhoads Stadium. The crowd was roaring by the time the ball split the L’s in center field. The game was finally up and running, and Alabama was about to blow it wide open.

Samford pitcher Sara Bond gave Alabama another two free bases by hitting catcher Alexis Pupillo, and walking outfielder Ana Roman. With two on, the Bulldogs decided that a fresh pitcher was the key. Infielder Ambrey Taylor proved that it wasn’t. With a good drop into left field, Pupillo was able to jet from second all the way home.

The score was 3-0 by the time Samford put an Alabama player down.

With an RBI from infielder Gerritt Griggs and another from Vandagriff, the score was sitting at 5-0 when the inning was closed out.

Pitcher Kaitlyn Pallozzi’s no hitter ended in the fourth with a single and then a triple that got lost in the outfield lights. The triple saw the Bulldogs secure their only run.

The bottom of the fourth was owned by one player, Pupillo. Samford changed pitchers again and Pupillo put a big dent in her confidence on the first pitch. The courtesy jog from Samford’s center fielder was laughable, because that ball was never going to land in the park.

With another empty inning, the score was 6-1 heading into the sixth.

Wells was facing a full count when she secured another homer for herself and Alabama. The sophomore has already tallied 10 this season.

With an RBI from infielder Mari Hubbard’s first appearance of the night, the Crimson Tide sat at eight runs. The Crimson Tide defense sent two more batters back to the bench and reliever Alea Johnson struck the other out.

“Our pitching and defense have been great lately and today was no different. We are excited to be 24-0 this far in the season, but we are not complacent,” head coach Patrick Murphy said.

The game concluded with the Crimson Tide on top at 8-1.

Alabama will return to Rhoads Stadium this weekend  for a challenging weekend series with the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks.

“This is a huge series coming up with Arkansas, and our team knows that one of my pet peeves is losing at home,” Murphy said.
