I don’t have to tell you how big of a loss it’d be if Seiya Suzuki had to miss any time (or was even just negatively affected by an injury) for the Cubs this season. Unfortunately, that is something you might have to think about tonight.
In the bottom of the first inning of Saturday’s World Baseball Classic matchup between teams Venezuela and Japan, Seiya Suzuki walked and then attempted to steal second base. In the process of being thrown out, he had an awkward (and hard) slide into the bag, which ultimately required him to leave the game, limping off the field in the process.

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) March 15, 2026The weird part is he seems to be shaking and protecting his knee/leg, but the actual bad part of the slide (to my eyes) is when he effectively face-planted before touching the base. Either way, it seems to be a lower body injury of some kind. Hopefully, we’ll find out soon enough. And double hopefully, we’ll learn that he’s (mostly) all good and was removed from the game out of an abundance of caution … and the fact that this is not the actual MLB season.
Not that it matters where it occurred (the same fluke injury could’ve happened in Spring Training). I am not making that complaint or worrying about that tonight. It’s just not worth it.
© Jovanny Hernandez / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesBest guess is this isn’t a huge deal. But maybe I’m just feeling optimistic on a Saturday night. Or denial. Maybe it’s denial.
Because, again, losing Seiya Suzuki would sting. He hit 32 homers last season and is a career 127 wRC+ guy (whose ceiling, I think we can all agree, is much higher than that). He’s also only 31, heading into a walk-year (a little extra motivation), and will enjoy the benefits of the Automated Ball-Strike system (robo umps) perhaps more than any other player in baseball by some measures.
If he did have to miss any time, even at the start of the season, the Cubs do have a number of outfield options that could fill in. For one, Matt Shaw seems to be getting a little bit of extra exposure in right field this spring, so maybe he’d be the obvious choice. But even beyond him, the Cubs have a bunch of roster-battlers in the outfield category (Dylan Carlson, Michael Conforto, Chas McCormick chief among them). Two of those guys might be ticketed for the team anyway.
And there’s also Cubs prospect Kevin Alcantara, who’s already on the 40-man and has previously made his debut. He might not be ready yet in the traditional sense, but if he could get something close to everyday playing time, the development advantages of facing big league pitching before heading back to Iowa could be worth considering (I really doubt the Cubs would go this way, but it is an option).
Anyway, we don’t know how bad this is or if it will even matter. Even Suzuki did need to rest, Opening Day is still 12 days away. And there’s an off-day after Opening Day. Suzuki could miss 13 days and that would cost the Cubs just one actual absence. For as much as I hate even having this discussion, I’m not sweating it yet.
