Beloved 90s Singer, With No. 1 Hit Song, Turns 43

Few songs capture the spirit of late 1990s pop quite like "MMMBop," which introduced the world to a trio of talented brothers called Hanson from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The upbeat track quickly became a global phenomenon, topping charts and turning its young performers into overnight stars. Taylor Hanson, the keyboardist and vocalist for the band, turned 43 on Saturday.

In 1992, brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac formed their rock band Hanson, which now has sold over 16 million records and has three top 20 albums in the United States. In addition, they have had three top 20 US Hot 100 singles and eight UK top 40 singles. The band now records under their own label, 3CG Records.

The group is best known for their song "MMMBop" from their debut album, Middle of Nowhere, released through Mercury/Polygram Records. The hit and its album also earned three Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, at the 40th Grammy Awards in 1998.

Taylor Hanson was born on March 14, 1983, in Jenks, Oklahoma, a suburb of Tulsa. He is the second child of seven born to Clarke Walker Hanson and Diana Frances. Though Hanson is Taylor's main band, he and, along with former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos and Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger, formed a new band called Tinted Windows.

On Instagram, Hanson dedicated a birthday post to their keyboardist, writing "Happy Birthday to brother T. He’s ringing in year 43 without skipping a beat," and posted a video interview of Taylor back in 2012.

Hanson is still actively touring and releasing music through their independent label. Since their formation more than 30 years ago, the indie rock group has released 11 studio albums, with their most recent being Red Green Blue in 2022. They also went on their Underneath Complete Tour in 2024.

Last week, the band revealed that they are restructuring their fan club. By the end of this month, paid Hanson.net memberships will be coming to an end after 25 years. Now, Hanson.net will remain active as a free, public-facing news and information site for the group.
