These Celebrities Are Not Welcome at the 2026 Oscars (and Why)

Award shows are meant to honour the dedication and talent of artists who have spent years perfecting their craft and delivering unforgettable performances. But every now and then, the spotlight shifts from the winner to controversy.

Over the year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has taken serious action against several high-profile figures – from expelling members to banning them for years. From Will Smith’s unforgettable ‘oops!’ on-stage moment to the industry-shaking Harvey Weinstein controversy, some Hollywood stars are no longer welcome at the Oscars.

Here’s a look at the celebrities who have been banned from the Academy Awards – and why.

    Carmine Caridi

    Expelled: 2004

Carmine Caridi, best known for his role in The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III as Carmine Rosato, holds the unforgettable distinction of being the first Academy member to ever be expelled.

    Paramount Pictures

Cardi was accused of leaking Oscar screeners for several movies meant only for Academy voters. The leaked titles reportedly included The Last Samurai, Mystic River, Big Fish, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and Something’s Gotta Give.

The FBI investigation later found the leaks had been happening for nearly three years. Caridi faced lawsuits from studios, including Columbia Pictures and Warner Bros., before ultimately being expelled from the Academy.

Carmine Caridi later died in 2019 at the age of 85 due to complications related to pneumonia.

    Roman Polanski

    Expelled: 2018

Polanski was arrested in 1977 and charged with several sexual offences involving a 13-year-old girl, Samantha Geimer.

Polanski pleaded as part of a plea deal, but before sentencing, he fled the United States and has lived mostly in Europe ever since to avoid prison time.

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, the Academy revised its standards of conduct and expelled Polanski in 2018. The director previously won the Oscar for his film The Pianist in 2003.

    Bill Cosby

    Expelled: 2018

In 2004, Cosby was accused of drugging and sexually assaulting former Temple University employee Andrea Constand.

    Universal Pictures

After years of legal battles, Cosby was convicted in 2018. Around the same time, the Academy updated its standards of conduct following the #MeToo movement, which resulted in Cosby’s expulsion alongside Polanski.

    Expelled: 2021

Cinematographer Kimmel was expelled from the Academy after it emerged that he had a criminal history involving a minor.

In 2004, Kimmel pleaded guilty to a criminal sexual misconduct case with a 15-year-old girl in 2003. Despite the charges, Kimmel was admitted to the Academy in 2007—four years after his first arrest.

    Harvey Weinstein

    Expelled: 2017

The Academy’s major reforms began with the case of former producer Harvey Weinstein.

Dozens of actresses and assistants accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, eventually leading to more than 80 women coming forward with allegations. The scandal helped ignite the global #MeToo movement.

The Academy expelled Weinstein in 2017, calling his actions “repugnant, abhorrent, and antithetical” to its values. He was later convicted of sex crimes both in New York and Los Angeles.

    Will Smith

    Ban: 2022-2032

Perhaps the freshest yet shocking Oscar controversy involves Will Smith.

During the 2022 ceremony, Smith walked onto the stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock after Rock made an unscripted joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The Academy banned Smith for 10 years for his misconduct. Smith later issued a statement accepting the Academy’s decision.

The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, hosted by Conan O'Brien, starting at 7 PM ET / 4 PM PT.
