ICC has now intervened and reprimanded Salman Ali Agha over the recent controversy in the second ODI against Bangladesh, where the player, after an unfortunate yet legal dismissal, threw his accessories to the ground and has been charged with violating the ICC Code of Conduct.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board and the Pakistan Cricket Board have long been close allies; however, that friendliness is not reflected among their players on the cricket field, and the Bangladesh captain ensured nothing came between them and competitive cricket.
A terrible incident that looked like a jolt to the sportsmanship spirit shared by individuals on the cricket field happened in the second game between Bangladesh and Pakistan. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the Bangladesh skipper, dismissed set batter Salman Ali Agha at the non-striker's end when the ball was stopped between Agha's legs, and the batter himself attempted to pick the ball and return it to the spinner.
The ICC has reportedly reprimanded Salman Ali Agha for having disrespected cricket equipment once he stepped out of the ropes after a disappointing dismissal at the non-striker's end.
He has been reprimanded, and one demerit point has been issued to him for the abuse of equipment during the second ODI against Bangladesh at the Sher-E-Bangla International Stadium in Mirpur. Match referee Neeyamur Rashid considered it a Level 1 offence and a breach of Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
He threw his gloves and his helmet onto the ground after being controversially run out by his opposite number, Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Then, while heading back to the pavilion, he picked up the equipment and threw it away after the dismissal was confirmed by the third umpire.
“The specific incident involved abusing cricket equipment on the ground while leaving the field. Regarding Salman Agha, he has no previous history of such behaviour. We have to maintain neutrality when we judge. Consequently, we have issued a reprimand and a demerit point," Neeyamur told The Daily Star.
No action taken on the head exchange between Agha and Litton Das
Salman Ali Agha was booked for the breach of an article that relates to the abuse of cricket equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.
However, the match referee, Neeyamur, mentioned that he would not be facing any such disciplinary action for the heated exchange with Bangladesh wicket-keeper Litton Das, as they treat it only as a major misunderstanding.
“We also considered the law, our training, and playing conditions. We discussed the matter with the ICC before making the final decision. From a neutrality standpoint, we delivered the judgment," Neeyamur added.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz explains his decision to run out Agha
The Bangladesh captain, who was responsible for the act, explained and reasoned with it in the post-match conference. He explained how his decision to run Salman Ali Agha out was only a tactical call made to take a legal advantage in the game.
However, Agha went on to claim that had he been in such a situation, he would have upheld the 'spirit' of the game in that moment. The debate has entirely been around this major fiasco, where some have sided with Agha, calling the Bangladesh skipper 'cheap,' while some have reasoned that he was well within the rules.
Notably, Salman Ali Agha, who was attempting to pick the ball during that time, would have been dismissed anyway if he had touched the ball, as that would have been considered obstructing the field.
