The spirit of the game might have taken a blow when Mehidy Hasan Miraz took the bails off from the stumps to run out Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha during the Bangladesh vs Pakistan second ODI (BAN vs PAK 2nd ODI) match on March 13 at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.
Former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Amir accused the umpires of supporting the controversial act made by the Bangladeshi bowler. Amir marked the incident as proof of a deteriorating umpiring standard. Mohammad Amir, the former, believes that the bowler forcefully stopped the batter from going into the crease.
On the fourth ball of the 39th over, Mehidy Hasan Miraz delivered a short-pitched ball to the Pakistan batter Mohammad Rizwan. Rizwan gently put the ball down on the ground. The ball hit Salman Ali Agha's pad, who was then at the non-striker's end, strikes. Miraz also moved to his right to collect the ball.
As the ball stopped after hitting the pad, in a friendly gesture, Agha picked up the ball and handed it over to the bowler, who was standing right behind him to collect it. As soon as Miraz received the ball from Agha, he threw the ball to the stumps and shouted for a runout.
The field umpire had to go upstairs to review the incident. According to the rules, as the batter was outside of the crease when the bails were dismantled by the ball, it was out, a run out. Salman Ali Agha was clearly furious over the incident, but he had to go back with no second option in hand. Agha dismissed for 64 off 62.
Mohammad Amir expressed dissatisfaction over the umpire's call
"Umpiring standards are going down day by day. My first question is why didn't the umpires take notice of what happened when it was clearly visible in the video? It was poor umpiring and poor standards. You can clearly see that Mehdy Hasan Miraz tried to forcefully stop Salman Ali Agha from getting back to his crease", Mohammad Amir stated.
"Agha even tried to offer help, and Miraz took that chance and ran him out. Maybe it was within the rules, but was it in the spirit of cricket? No. As a leader, you shouldn’t use such tactics just to get a wicket. My question again is for the umpires, why didn’t they notice it and give the benefit to the batter?" Mohammad Amir raised the question to the umpires.
Mohammad Amir further said that in some cases moral integrity should be kept before the rules to keep the spirit of cricket alive.
"Even if Miraz thought it was within the rules, sometimes morals and integrity should come before the rules. Whatever happened should never happen again. Umpires are also to blame here, and the spirit of cricket must always stay alive in this game", Mohammad Amir opined.
Pakistan eventually won the match
Meanwhile, the tricky act did not allow Bangladesh to claim the match. Scoring 274 runs in the first innings, Pakistan eventually won the match by a massive margin of 128 runs through the DLS method.
With Pakistan as the winner of the second match, the three-match ODI series is hanging in a level with a 1-1 scoreline, with one more match to play. The winner of the third match will claim the series as well.
