Accumulating snow expected in Chicago area after 60-degree temps this weekend

Winter appears to be bringing a last-minute rush to the Chicago area, with a winter storm expected to dump accumulating snow just hours after spring-like temps and another round of potentially severe storms hit the region.

The weather whiplash is set to heighten Sunday, just as Chicago celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with weekend festivities.

After dangerous winds Friday and a chilly, but largely dry Saturday, Sunday will likely see multiple seasons in a single day.

With highs reaching near 60 degrees to start the day, a chance for severe weather, particularly in areas hit hard by strong storms and tornadoes earlier this week will move in for the afternoon and early evening. Then, plummeting temps could turn rain into accumulating snowfall across parts of the area overnight and into Monday morning, as highs drop into the 20s.

Areas north and west of Chicago will have a lower threat of severe weather, but a higher chance of impactful snow, though the exact path of snowy system and how much snow it will dump on the area remains in flux.

Rain will transition to snow from the northwest to the southeast as temperatures drop below freezing after midnight through 6 a.m. Monday.

Wind gusts could be over 40 mph, so blowing snow will also threaten travel for morning commuters.

As of projections Friday, totals could range from 1 to 5 inches, with the higher amounts more likely around Dekalb, McHenry and Boone counties.

Chicago could have around 2 or 3 inches, and lower amounts are expected in northwest Indiana.

A winter storm watch will be in effect across southern Wisconsin, including Kenosha County, Sunday afternoon through Monday evening, with anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of snow expected and 45 mph winds making for hazardous conditions.

Things look to stay cold and windy throughout the day Monday, so blowing snow could also cause travel problems even as the snow tapers off Monday afternoon and evening.

Wind chills will be in the single digits most of Monday before dropping below zero Monday night into Tuesday.

Highs will be in the 20s Tuesday before returning to the 40s and 50s the rest of the week.
