BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Scenes like the recent truck-ramming and shooting at a Michigan synagogue are weighing heavily on the minds of the local Jewish community. In response, the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Brighton is taking steps to ensure safety remains a top priority.
CEO of JCC Jason Vasquez said the center got numerous emails and phone calls from community members asking about safety protocols.
Vasquez said he’s committed to making sure people feel safety is the number one priority when they walk through the doors. JCC leaders had already been discussing security before the attack at Temple Israel near Detroit.
Vasquez said if you’re walking around the JCC Friday, you’ll see more security patrolling the facility. They also talked about how they may detect threats before they happen.
“We’re in close communication with law enforcement and security advisors from both local and across the nation,” Vasquez said. “We’re taking steps behind the scenes, that we won’t go into discussion about, to ensure that there’s the proper coverage.”
Vasquez said the JCC is encouraging the community to continue visiting because it wants everyone involved in its programs to know they are in a safe place. He also said the world is a very unpredictable place, but safety is the community center’s commitment.
The JCC has not made any changes to its schedule of events and remains committed to being a second home for its visitors, Vasquez said.
