TEAM USA LINEUP — The knockout stage of the World Baseball Classic begins tonight, and Team USA finds itself in a win-or-go-home matchup against Team Canada after a tense and occasionally uneven run through pool play.
USA Lineup:
Bobby Witt Jr., SS Bryce Harper, 1B Aaron Judge, RF Kyle Schwarber, DH Alex Bregman, 3B Roman Anthony, LF Cal Raleigh, C Brice Turang, 2B Pete Crow-Armstrong, CFThe World Baseball Classic has reached the knockout stage. From a field of 20 teams, only eight remain. The round-robin portion of the tournament is over, and from this point forward, the math is simple: win three games, and you’re a world champion.
Team USA’s path to the quarterfinals wasn’t exactly smooth.
One of the biggest storylines of pool play was the Americans’ surprising loss to Italy, which briefly put their advancement into doubt and forced some uncomfortable scoreboard watching. Ultimately, Italy’s win over Mexico secured the United States the second qualifying spot out of Pool B, allowing Mark DeRosa’s club to advance despite the early stumble.
Even with the hiccup, Team USA has looked like one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament.
The American offense has been exactly what it was billed to be — explosive. Through pool play, the U.S. scored the second-most runs in the field while consistently applying pressure with a lineup packed with MVP-caliber hitters. The pitching staff has been equally impressive in stretches, posting the tournament’s lowest WHIP and racking up more strikeouts than any other team, though the home run ball has been an occasional issue.
DeRosa drew some criticism earlier in the week for resting several stars during the loss to Italy, but that approach almost certainly won’t repeat itself in an elimination game. Expect a full-strength lineup featuring Aaron Judge, Bobby Witt Jr., Cal Raleigh, and Kyle Schwarber, each of whom finished in the top four of MVP voting last season.
On the mound, the Americans will turn to Giants ace Logan Webb, who will get the start in this quarterfinal matchup. If the U.S. advances, National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes could be in line to take the ball in the semifinals.
Canada’s road to the quarterfinals looked a little different.
The Canadians didn’t rely on power — they hit only two home runs during pool play — but they played clean, consistent baseball and finished with back-to-back wins over Cuba and Puerto Rico to win Pool A. Their only loss came by a single run, and the roster features plenty of major-league experience even if it lacks the same star power as Team USA.
Seattle Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor may be the most recognizable name in the lineup, but Canada’s offense has been driven largely by Marlins outfielder Owen Caissie and veteran infielder Abraham Toro, both of whom were among the team’s most productive hitters in pool play. Oakland center fielder Denzel Clarke has also been a difference-maker, particularly with his defense and athleticism in the outfield.
Canada will hand the ball to Michael Soroka, who allowed just one run in three innings during his first appearance of the tournament against Colombia.
Now the stakes are simple. Win and advance to the semifinals. Lose, and the tournament run ends tonight.
