SPOILER—This post includes spoilers from Outlander Season 8, Episode 2.
It was just a week ago that Outlander fans were reintroduced to Amy McCallum (Joanne Thomson). Only now she was Amy Lindsay, having married Evan Lindsay (Gary Lamont), who had also become stepdad to her two young kids, Aidan (Cillian McDonald) and Orrie (Ethan Chalmers). Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) were overjoyed to see her, especially after the difficulties she'd previously endured.
That joy turned to sorrow when a bear showed up in Season 8, Episode 2 of the Starz series. Amy was picking berries with Brianna (Sophie Skelton), Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small), and Lizzie (Caitlin O'Ryan) when it charged through the forest and attacked Amy. Despite Brianna shooting her gun at it, Amy was mortally wounded. She hung on long enough for Evan and her boys to say their goodbyes before she died. Viewers were shocked and devastated by the traumatic event, despite it taking up only five minutes of the episode.
"The Bear Attack!! Omg, they made the injury so realistic, it was horrible!" wrote a fan on the OutlanderReddit page.
Even those who had read the book the scene was taken from, Go Tell the Bees That I'm Gone, were surprised at how emotional they became.
"I knew what was coming for Amy and I still sobbed," wrote another fan.
However, others felt the attack wasn't very realistic, finding the scene more frustrating than sad.
"I mean, grizzlies are incredibly fast but this obviously wasn't that," wrote an annoyed viewer. "And yeah, this black bear just randomly decided to attack her for no reason?"
"Exactly my thoughts," another Redditor responded. "'Let me run forever through the woods and jump a human for no reason' -said no black bear ever."
We first met Amy in Season 6, Episode 1. She was a recent widow and mother of Aiden, a small child, and Orrie, an infant, and she'd just moved to the Ridge. As she struggled to manage her home and the boys, Roger (Richard Rankin) often came to help her with things she needed done. But when people started assuming they were having an affair, he introduced her to her future husband, Evan.
