ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The New York State Senate and Assembly released their counter-proposal to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s executive budget this week. The proposal included several notable allocations for the Rochester region. Specifically, the legislature approved $4 million for Garth Fagan Dance, $300,000 for the Ibero-American Action League, $23 million for the Inner Loop redevelopment project, and $375,000 for Lifespan.
News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with Sen. Jeremy Cooney regarding the legislature’s funding decisions.
“We have renewed the Lifespan appropriation year after year. Garth Fagan is something special. It’s a legacy marker to help modernize that physical space in downtown Rochester,” Cooney said in response to the significant difference in funds allocated towards the non-profits. “It’s a one-time grant, so that’s a little bit of the difference in the number size.”
Cooney explained that community-based and nonprofit organizations approach his office throughout the year to discuss their needs. He emphasized that Garth Fagan Dance’s current space no longer meets its needs, and improving it would be a historic investment in an organization that brings pride to Rochester.
Garth Fagan Dance’s executive director expressed gratitude for the proposed funding. “For more than five decades, Garth Fagan Dance has elevated Rochester as an international center for contemporary dance while developing generations of artists, educators, and young performers,” the director said. “We are beyond grateful for Senator Cooney’s devotion to the arts and particularly to Garth Fagan Dance in proposing this initiative, and we are hopeful for a positive outcome.”
The budget is still in negotiation, with a vote expected at the beginning of next month. However, it could take a couple more months before the final decision on state funding is made.
