Kevin Byard wasn’t a member of the Chicago Bears for a long time, but it was a good time watching him play.
Byard, 32, signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots earlier in the week. The move reunites Byard with Mike Vrabel, the Patriots head coach who had the safety when he was a Pro Bowler with the Tennessee Titans in 2021. As much as that is a feel-good anecdote, the move also means the Bears are moving on from a team captain and a productive member of their secondary.

In addition to the interceptions, pass breakups, tackles, and other stats, Chicago’s football team will need someone to fil the leadership void Byard leaves behind. A Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro in 2025, Byard was also one of those players who had the pulse of the team. He was someone that Ben Johnson could lean on as a first-year head coach. And someone who commanded respect from teammates and opponents alike.
I will miss watching Kevin Byard play football for the Bears. But I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. We will always have quality memories from his time in Chicago.
