ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert remains up through Friday night and into the first part of Saturday morning for a round of strong winds. High Wind Warnings are posted for Orleans, Genesee and Wyoming Counties, while a Wind Advisory is up for the rest of our area. Our window for strong winds will be between about 9PM – 4AM west of Monroe County, and then midnight through about 8AM for the Finger Lakes region. This isn’t expected to a high end wind event for us, but some isolated to scattered power outages are possible, especially west and south.
In addition to the wind, it’ll be turning colder with some lake effect snow. The higher elevations of Wyoming County could see a 3-6″ accumulation by early Saturday morning, with a couple inches in Wayne County, and little new snowfall for everybody else.
Saturday will start off windy and cold with some areas of lake effect snow lingering. We’re still expecting a chilly St. Patrick’s Day parade with temperatures in the lower 30s and a gusty wind. Most snow showers should be ending at that point, with some breaks of sun returning. Winds ease Saturday evening.
Our next power storm will be moving through the Great Lakes on Sunday. A warm front will bring a few hours of snow Sunday morning, but once again temperatures rise through the 40s to near 50 by late evening, which will melt any snow that accumulated on the grass. Sunday will be breezy, but winds should remain in check. As that area of low pressure strengthens and moves closer, both winds and temperatures pick up on Monday. In fact, we could push into the 60s on Monday before a strong cold front plows through. This front may bring some thunder, followed by tumbling temperatures, some lake effect snow and another round of gusty winds. We’ll monitor the storm and wind threat into the weekend, and a Yellow Alert may be issued for Monday.
