Rupert Murdoch is the father of Fox News, as well as to six adult children by three different women—a little ironic when you consider how much conservatives espouse about family values, but whatever.
The pint-sized patriarch, who celebrated his 95th birthday on March 11, 2026, inherited his own father's newspaper in Adelaide, Australia, before expanding his own media conglomerate to include tabloids and the most influential (for better or worse, often the latter) TV news outlet in the world.
The Australian-born Murdoch, who's at the center of the NetflixdocuseriesThe Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty, largely inspired the fictional HBO hit Succession, which followed the fights between siblings to inherit their father's conservative media empire.
Though the real-life behind-the-scenes battle for control of the Aussie magnate's estate was less dramatic (and significantly less funny), the outcome of the family feud between Murdoch's eldest kids—Prudence MacLeod, Lachlan Murdoch, James Murdoch and Elisabeth Murdoch—had major impacts on global politics, and only time will tell just how deep and severe those impacts will ultimately get.
It was an impact Rupert himself recognized, writing to a manager of daughter Prudence's trust (via the New York Times), “This has been a family-dominated business for 70 years. It would be a disaster for at least the U.S. and Australia if these assets fell into the wrong hands.”
Get to know all of Rupert Murdoch's children and the family that controls not just Fox, but also NewsCorp (which owns the Wall Street Journal, New York Post, The Sun, Barron's, the California Post and HarperCollins books, among many others)—and, largely, the direction of the United States and the world, heaven help us all.

Who will inherit the Murdoch estate?

That's a great question, worthy of its own HBO series. (Oh wait, that already happened?)
The Murdoch kids quietly battled about the succession of Rupert Murdoch for seemingly decades, and in September 2025, NPR reports, it was finally settled: After buying out Prudence, Elisabeth and James' shares, with each receiving roughly $1.1 billion, Lachlan Murdoch will inherit NewsCorp and Fox Corporation when Rupert dies.
The ruling also cemented that Grace and Chloe Murdoch will also each get an equal slice of their dad's morally beleaguered buyout pie, but also will not have any say in the business whatsoever.
The news came after Lachlan and Rupert sued Prudence, James and Elisabeth in probate court to negate any control they may have had over NewsCorp and Fox, especially in terms of any potential deviation from its ultra-right wing, hyper-conservative political leanings.
“It’s great news for investors,” Murdoch said of the family settlement (via the Los Angeles Times). “It gives us a clarity about our strategy going forward — and shows that our strategy will be consistent.”

Who is James Murdoch?

James Murdoch is Rupert's youngest son with Anna Torv (not to be confused with the star ofThe Last of UsSeason 1, natch), born Dec. 13, 1972. BBC News reports that he was long regarded as the sharpest of Rupert's spawn, as well as the most diametrically opposed to his father politically (a combination that shouldn't be too shocking, honestly)—at one point, he had an eyebrow ring and bleached hair and was photographed napping on a sofa during a press conference.
James was raised in New York City and enrolled in Harvard University, but dropped out ... to start his own hip-hop label. Yes, we're serious: He founded Rawkus Records in 1995. It actually boasted a great roster, including Eminem, Common, Talib Kweli and more. James stepped down from the label after his dad's company acquired it in 1998.
James also worked as a cartoonist, first for Harvard's Lampoon, then for the family empire's Gear magazine. He's credited with turning Rupert on to the Internet. He moved to Hong Kong in 1999 to run NewsCorp's Asian satellite TV service Star TV, and helped the subsidiary turn a profit for the first time in 2002.
He helped create Sky Procycling and has a black belt in karate, according to CNN.
In 2015, James became CEO of 21st Century Fox Corporation until its sale in 2019. He resigned from all of the family's endeavors in 2020. He said in a pointed statement to the New York Times at the time, "My resignation is due to disagreements over certain editorial content published by the company's news outlets and certain other strategic decisions." Rupert's reportedly left-leaning son told the Times of his father in an interview the same year, "We've been arguing about politics since I was a teenager."
In 2024, James endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election and previously supported and donated to Joe Biden in 2020.
James Murdoch's net worth is estimated at about $2 billion, per Celebrity Net Worth.

Who is James Murdoch's wife?

James Murdoch married Kathryn Hufschmid in 2000. Hufschmid worked in marketing and PR for Gear magazine (where James was a cartoonist) and Louis Vuitton, then co-founded the fashion label Thakoon.
Hufschmid now focuses on philanthropy. She served as an executive director for the Clinton Climate Initiative, a division of the Clinton Foundation, from 2006 to 2011, and had an Oxford University fellowship until 2012.
One of her passions is the fight against fake news, which, let's be real, her father-in-law proliferates. The Financial Times reported that Hufschmid contributed a cool $1 million to The 19th, which focuses on news around voting and women's rights, as well as several million to fund climate change reporting at the Associated Press. She even teamed up with Prince Harry on projects to fight disinformation.
She also supports political reform, including ranked choice voting and open primary elections.
“A root cause of climate inaction was that every time you had solutions, they weren’t getting passed through our broken political system,” she told FT. “[Reform] seemed like the perfect thing for us: it was the root cause of things we cared about. It was something that other philanthropists weren’t really doing and it had very, very high leverage.”
Hufschmid described herself as a "radical centrist" and said Rupert is largely "misunderstood" by the public, explaining, “It’s also a done deal. He’s made a lot of choices and that reputation is solidified. There’s not really anything I can do about that.”
James and Hufschmid share two daughters, Anneka and Emerson, and son Walter.
Where is James Murdoch now?
James has beenopenly critical of Fox News' and other News Corp. properties' coverage of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection attempt; dismissal of climate change and support for Donald Trump.
Hufschmid and James run their own Quadrivium Foundation, which aims to fight climate change, improve technology and science and protect democracy. He put $100 million of his personal fortune into the initiative. The couple also invested in The Bulwark, a media company spearheaded by anti-Trump Republicans Bill Kristol and Charlie Sykes, FT reported.

Lachlan Murdoch is "the eldest boy," if you will, of Rupert Murdoch and Torv, born Sept. 8, 1971. According to NPR, he is the most politically aligned with his father.
Lachlan was raised largely in New York City and graduated from Princeton University.
Lachlan biographer Paddy Manning told NPR that while Lachlan is right-wing, he's more "hands-off" in his approach to political media and is less likely to act as a "kingmaker" than his dad.
Lachlan moved to Sydney in 2005 amid clashes with Roger Ailes (who was forced out of Fox for alleged sexual harassment and misconduct and died in 2017), but moved back stateside in 2015. In 2014, he was named co-chair of Fox Corporation, and serves as CEO. During his tenure, Fox shelled out $787.5 million in a settlement to Dominion Voting Systems after the network falsely reported that the 2020 election was stolen, and another similar lawsuit from Smartmatic over the claims is still pending, the New York Times reports.
“I think James is embarrassed by Fox News. I don’t think Lachlan is embarrassed by Fox News,” James Packer, a longtime Murdoch family friend (and former fiancé ofMariah Carey, who later sued him for essentially wasting her time), said in a 2024 Australian Broadcasting Corporation documentary (via the New York Times). “I think Lachlan is proud of Fox News, and, you know, I think that’s probably one of the reasons why Lachlan is where he is and James isn’t.”
Bafflingly, Lachlan reportedly believes that Fox News is a "center-right" outlet, which means the Overton window is so far to the right that if the world were flat, it would likely go hurtling over the edge.

How old is Lachlan Murdoch?
As of this writing, Lachlan Murdoch is 54 years old.
Lachlan married former model and TV personality Sarah O'Hare in 1999.
In addition to covering magazines like Vogue, Sarah Murdoch has also hosted Australian morning show Today, Australia's Top Model, Pride of Australia and the very short-lived Everybody Dance Now.
Sarah is an ambassador for the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and works with Australia's National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth, among others.
Despite Lachlan's work directly negatively impacting LGBTQIA+ communities, in 2023, Sarah and Lachlan reportedly donated $1 million to Qtopia, a queer museum in Sydney.
Who are Lachlan Murdoch's children?
Lachlan and Sarah share sons Kalan and Aidan and daughter Aerin.

Lachlan reportedly describes his own ideals as "socially liberal but fiscally conservative," which suggests he's a run of the mill Libertarian (a pretty unsurprising stance of an adult child of a rich white man)—except, well, he's also been a major donor to staunchly conservative Republican Mitch McConnell. When he wasn't busy glitching, McConnell's work in Congress, including his blocking of then-President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee, ultimately led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, suggesting Lachlan perhaps isn't quite as "socially liberal" as he wants us (and maybe himself) to believe. Some sources reported that Lachlan is actually even more conservative than his dad.
How much money is Lachlan Murdoch worth?
Lachlan Murdoch's net worth is estimated at roughly $2.25 billion, per the Australian Financial Review.

That remains to be seen, but so far, it sure looks that way.
Seth Lewis, a journalism and media academic at the University of Oregon, told the Australian Financial Review that Lachlan will likely keep supporting Trump through Fox News' programming, but that it might be somewhat more cautious moving forward.
“With Lachlan’s control secured, the Murdoch–Trump relationship looks set to remain transactional but symbiotic: Fox retains its role as the most powerful voice in the pro-Trump media world, in ways that serve both the Murdochs’ bottom line and Trump’s need to retain his base,” Lewis said. “Though, after the Dominion case that got them into so much trouble after the 2020 election, we may be less likely to see the kind of reckless fealty to Trump’s claims in the years ahead, particularly if political winds more generally turn against the administration amid what could be an economic downturn ahead.”
Are Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch still married?
Indeed they are.
Lachlan is executive chair and CEO of Fox Corporation, chair of News Corp. and executive chairman of Australian broadcast company Nova. His role of successor to his father's throne is secured as of late 2025.
Where does Lachlan Murdoch currently live?
Lachlan and his family live in Sydney, where they moved in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic (which Fox News largely downplayed as a hoax).

Who is Prudence Murdoch?

Prudence Murdoch is Rupert Murdoch's eldest child, who he shares with his first wife, Australian model Patricia Booker. She goes by Prudence MacLeod, her married name.
Prudence was born in August 1958 and raised in Adelaide, Australia, until Booker and Rupert split. In 1968, she moved to London with Rupert and then-wife Torv when Rupert purchased News of the World.
Prudence was reportedlysomewhat estranged from Booker after she and Rupert divorced, as the model took on a hard-partying lifestyle and was accused of neglecting her daughter, and Prudence wanted to live with her dad fulltime.
Prudence was also somewhat estranged from Rupert for a time, especially after he mentioned in a 1997 interview that he had "three children," leading her to give an interview—published on Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch's wedding day—with the headline, "The Forgotten Daughter." Ouch! (They've since reconciled.)

Widely believed to be the inspiration for Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) in Succession, Elisabeth Murdoch was born in Australia on Aug. 22, 1968. She is the daughter of Rupert Murdoch and writer Anna Maria dePeyster. She grew up in the U.K. and New York City.
Elisabeth started her career as program acquisitions manager of FX Networks in 1994 before resigning from the Murdoch empire entirely in 2000. In 2001, she founded the Shine Limited production company, which helms shows like MasterChef, until the company was acquired by—brace yourself!—News Corporation in 2011.
Intriguingly, despite Shine Limited being in the red, The Guardian reported, Elisabeth managed to personally profit close to $173 million in the deal (roughly $251 million when adjusted for inflation). She stepped down in 2014 after Shine merged with Endemol and Core Media.
Who is Elisabeth Murdoch's husband?
Elisabeth has been married three times.
