CHARLOTTE, N.Y. — The statue of Mary, which was recently recovered, is back at Holy Cross Church. The church is now planning to secure the statue to prevent future thefts.
Fr. Bill Coffas, Pastor of Holy Cross Church, expressed his joy over the statue’s return. “We’re very happy at the community of Mother of Sorrows and Holy Cross,” he said.
The statue was reported missing on Sunday and returned to the church Thursday night. Fr. Coffas explained how the statue was retrieved. “Someone reached out to Father Justin Miller and he was able to retrieve it,” Fr. Coffas said. “He went and picked it up at someone’s residence.”
The grotto where the statue is usually placed holds historical significance. It was built by the Hoysic brothers after World War II. Pete, Bill, George, and Joe Hoysic prayed the Hail Mary for their safety during the war. The church re-dedicated the site last summer.
Fr. Coffas noted the community’s strong reaction to the theft. “It reminds me of what I love about our community,” he said. “While one person made a bad decision to take it, the rest of the community rallied around this cause. Catholics but also non-Catholics.”
The church received numerous offers from people wanting to donate a statue or money to replace it. The statue will be displayed inside Holy Cross for the Saturday evening Mass at 5 p.m. and the Sunday morning Masses at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. The church aims to have a secure setup for the statue in the grotto by Easter.
