ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Police Accountability Board held a meeting on Thursday to present its findings on how the Rochester Police Department uses surveillance technology.
The meeting at the Thomas P. Ryan R-Center allowed the public to learn about the PAB’s new report and provide feedback. The board discussed RPD’s use of body cameras, blue-light cameras, and how the data is stored and used.
“Surveillance technology has been something that’s been evolving rapidly over the past few years. There have been many conversations around the country recently around things like facial recognition and automatic license plate readers,” said Sara Jenks, the PAB’s oversight manager. “We want people to know that these are things law enforcement is using, and even someone who hasn’t committed a crime is giving up their information through.”
According to the report, Rochester residents are three times more likely to be surveilled by blue light cameras in predominantly Black or Hispanic neighborhoods than in predominantly white neighborhoods. The report also says that camera placement doesn’t correlate with crime rate.
The PAB is asking for more public feedback on the recommendations listed in the report before it’s submitted to RPD. You can see the full report here.
