What a massive win for the Denver Nuggets.
On a second night of a back-to-back while losing an hour, the Nuggets found a way to gut out a second half comeback victory against the 2-seed San Antonio Spurs. The Nuggets trailed by as many as 20 points, but an incredible 83-point second half finally allowed them to push through after several comeback attempts were staunched by Spurs three-pointers on the other end.
Denver won 136-131 in what must be the best two-game stretch of the 2025-26 season to date.
Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic led the way. Murray had 39 points and 7 assists while shooting a robust 15-of-15 at the free throw line. Despite the rest advantage, the Spurs were unable to wear down Murray throughout this game. He played 22 of the 24 second half minutes and was absolutely nails down the stretch. The turnaround floaters, the stepback three-pointers, and the drives into contact were free throws were just a taste of an elite Murray second half performance.

Nikola Jokic was incredible in his own right with 31 points, 20 rebounds, 12 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Victor Wembanyama might’ve made an impact against Jokic in this game, but he was out with a precautionary ankle injury. Rather than play center Luke Kornet straight up against Jokic, the Spurs elected to deploy Keldon Johnson and even Stephon Castle against Jokic down the stretch, attempting to harass him as much as possible with a smaller player.
Jokic dealt with the pressure well, often using himself as a decoy in the second half and a screener/playmaker for Murray and others. The Nuggets offense rolled when the ball got into the paint, and the easiest way for Denver to do it was to use Jokic’s skill set and pass to the open man. Of course, Jokic dominated the defensive glass due to the size advantage.
Denver struggled out of the gate to match the combination of athleticism and shooting from the Spurs, who shot the ball well from three on the night. The Spurs shot 47 threes and made 40% of them and everyone on the Spurs hit at least one three outside of their two centers tonight.
The Nuggets had to find an edge somewhere, and they finally found a rhythm in the fourth quarter with a small ball lineup that featured Murray, Bruce Brown, Julian Strawther, Christian Braun, and Spencer Jones. Denver was down 12 at the beginning of the quarter, but 8 points by Jones, and three-pointers by Murray and Strawther helped Denver cut the deficit to five before Jokic returned. That allowed Murray a short rest before returning to help Denver close out the game.

In the important moments, it was a lot of contributions from different players that stood out. Spencer Jones truly gave Denver life. He didn’t play a ton in the first half but played 21 of the 24 second half minutes, defending extremely hard and battling on both ends of the floor. He finished with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks while shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 3-of-6 from three. It was perhaps Jones’ most valuable game of the season and it occurred at just the right time.
In addition, Cam Johnson made some big plays down the stretch too. 9 of his 15 points came in the 4th quarter as the ball found him in the clutch moments. Denver needed someone to create offense out of dribble hand-offs with Jokic in the brief stretch Murray rested, and Johnson was up to the task. He also hit a big three off a Jokic dime to put the Nuggets up 9 with three minutes to go, which effectively put the Nuggets up for good.
For so many reasons, this win was a big one for the Nuggets. First and foremost, they beat the 2 seed in the West immediately after beating the Houston Rockets last night. This was a difficult game with Denver losing an hour traveling West to East AND playing an hour earlier in the day. The Spurs, even without the incredible Victor Wembanyama, are a great team. After tonight, the Spurs are still 10-5 in games Wembanyama doesn’t play. Their formula of guards driving and forwards spacing the floor doesn’t change.
In addition to beating the Spurs, the Nuggets have also won two games in a row versus playoff teams for the first time since January 5th and January 7th vs the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics. It’s been a long time since the Nuggets have maintained consistency against the better teams in the NBA, and that was true tonight…until it wasn’t.
The Nuggets made it happen down the stretch, gutting out a tough win against a tough opponent. They will look to make it three wins in a row against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night.
