ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert is posted for Friday evening and night for a period of strong winds. This comes as a clipper crosses the region. The strongest winds once the low moves away will tend to focus east of Lake Erie, with some gusts 50-60 mph in Genesee and Wyoming Counties, possibly southern parts of Orleans County. High Wind Warnings are posted there. Meanwhile Wind Advisories are up for the rest of our area Friday evening and night with wind gusts 45-50 mph possible.
Before the strongest winds set in, we’ll see some snow moving in Friday morning. This will be a wet snow that will change over to some rain showers during the afternoon. So, while we may see around an inch of accumulation on grassy surfaces, the snow should melt on the roads almost immediately, minimizing any impact on the commute. Any snow that does briefly accumulate on the grass should melt as temperatures rise toward 40 degrees.
Lake effect snow will develop Friday night and continue into Saturday morning, with a couple inches of accumulation likely into Wyoming county and the higher elevations of Livingston County. Outside of that, we shouldn’t see much accumulation, if any. But it’ll be a chilly and flaky start to the weekend. Winds will also be elevated, especially during the morning. But we should see the snow end and some sun return for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. So if you have plans to venture out, don’t let chilly weather stop you!
Sunday turns active with another strong storm moving in. Initially it’ll bring a period of snow in the morning, but anything that accumulates will melt very quickly as temperatures rise through the 40s. Monday may briefly climb into the 60s before a drastic drop in temperatures, rain, possibly some thunder and winds picking up. There’s the potential for another round of strong winds late Monday into Tuesday. This will be followed by a blast of winter will cold air and lake snow for St. Patrick’s Day.
