What the Chicago Bears Are Getting in New Left Tackle Jedrick Wills Jr.

The Chicago Bears appear to be cooking up a left tackle competition ahead of the 2026 NFL season. Jedrick Wills Jr. joins the mix along Chicago’s offensive line. News of Wills’ signing, which the team made officially official on Thursday, came days after reportedly agreeing to terms with Braxton Jones. You can read our original post on the Wills signing here.

Jedrick Wills Jr.’s Role with the Chicago Bears in 2026

Jedrick Willis is a classic post-hype sleeper candidate. A first-round pick with the Cleveland Browns in 2020, Wills was a standout performer at the University of Alabama. Wills earned first-team All-SEC and second-team All-American honors in his final season with the Crimson Tide, which helped launch his draft stock and ultimately led him to be the 10th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Things didn’t pan out for Wills in Cleveland. They might not pan out for him in Chicago. But this is a worthwhile dice roll for a team in search of offensive line help and a player looking for another chance to prove himself at the highest level.

The first step toward getting back on the right track for Jedrick Wills is to prove his health. Wills has been limited to just 13 games since the start of the 2023 season. Ankle injuries early in his career and a knee surgery in 2023 are among the ailments that have kept Wills off the field and from realizing his full potential. He was benched in 2024 and took the year off in 2025 so he could rehab his injuries. It has been a rough road for a once much-ballyhooed prospect who draft-watchers were (understandably) high on back in 2020.

For what it’s worth, it sounds like Wills is ready to embrace competition at Halas Hall.

“I’m coming in and just trying to prove what I can do, see where that takes me,” Wills said (h/t Chris Emma). “I’ve been working my ass off to get healthy. I got great confidence in what I can do.”

As of today, Jedrick Wills and Braxton Jones headline the left tackle competition. Wills has a unique prospect pedigree and is looking to put a lengthy history of injury concerns behind him. Jones, who re-signed with the team earlier in the week, was Chicago’s Week 1 starting left tackle for each of the last four seasons before injuries and subpar play moved him out of the picture. But let’s not forget about Theo Benedet, who started eight games after Jones was sidelined before an injury opened the door for Ozzie Trapilo to enter the starting lineup. And now, we’ve got a full-blown competition on the horizon because of Trapilo’s injury in the Bears’ playoff victory against the Packers.

At first glance, this could be the most intriguing position battle we see at Bears camp this season. Chicago’s football team has three hungry players who could play their way into a starting job between now and when the season kicks off in September. I look forward to seeing how it shakes out, especially now that someone with a first-round pedigree such as Jedrick Wills Jr. has entered the fray.
