*Warning: Contains MAJOR spoilers for Virgin River season 7!*
Virgin River may be a cosy romantic drama at the best of times, but it sure does know how to pull on the heartstrings, especially when it comes to its season finales.
Season 7 was quite the rollercoaster for plenty of Virgin River residents. For Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson), they take the first steps in their adoptive parent journey, while Jack and Preacher (Colin Lawrence) navigate their professional partnership so Preacher can set up a restaurant of his own.
"Most of Mel’s life in season 7 is chewed up by building a house [and wondering], 'Am I going to have this baby or not?' It’s what she’s been wanting for so many years of her life,” Breckenridge told Tudum. "She really does an excellent job at rolling with the punches through the season."
Meanwhile, Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale) and Denny (Kai Bradbury) navigate life as new parents, something Lizzie takes time adjusting to as she struggles with postpartum anxiety.
But nothing could have prepared viewers for the finale, which has left fans with more questions than they began season 7 with!
Wondering how it all unfolded? Read on for everything you need to know about the Virgin River season 7 ending. Be warned, spoilers ahead!
Virgin River season 7 ending explained: Does Brady die?
For once, it seemed that everything was aligning for Brady (Ben Hollingsworth). He and Brie (Zibby Allen) were finally back together and had gone public with their relationship.
Earlier in the season, Brady had gone looking for Lark (Elise Gatien), on a mission to try and get his money back. When he eventually tracks her down, he comes to a realisation that she and Hazel would have a better life with the money and he returns to Virgin River.
After a brief brush with death while dealing with wildfires in Yosemite, Brady weighs up the idea of working elsewhere before he and Brie finally make their feelings known.
"The thing that felt interesting was Brie’s capacity to grow, to not try to return to the woman she was before her assault," Smith told Tudum. "Accept herself for the woman that she is right now, because that’s who Brady wants, and she’s learning to accept him for who he is."
Everything seems to be going well and after agreeing to make dinner for Brie that night, he starts to make his way over on his motorbike.
While riding, he looks up and notices a truck on the side of the road and goes to swerve, and he slides off of the bike. The scene then changes to the birth of Mel and Jack's adopted baby, providing no answer on Brady's fate.
At the moment, it's unclear what happens to Brady and it won't be revealed until season 8 whether he survives or not.
"That will also play out in season 8, whether he survived the accident or not," Smith confirmed to Tudum.
Do Mel and Jack adopt a baby?
Things were well and truly looking up for Mel and Jack following their wedding day.
In season 6, viewers were introduced to Marley (Rachel Drance), a pregnant woman who was planning to put her baby up for adoption. But things didn't align with her original choice in birth parents and in season 7, she asked Mel if she wanted to adopt her baby.
After plenty of back and forth, and even a time of Marley potentially keeping the baby, she eventually decides Mel and Jack can adopt the baby.
But this doesn't come without its struggles when Marley requires specialised medical care, in which the doctors discover that the baby has a heart issue. The following day, Marley and the parents-to-be arrive at the hospital in LA and in the final moments of the season, Marley gives birth before Mel and Jack and their son drive to the NICU.
"I’m hoping that at some point they get to some kind of normalcy, but I am excited to see Mel as a mother," Breckenridge told Tudum. "I think we’ve anticipated that moment for far too long."
Does Preacher leave Virgin River?
No, Preacher does not leave Virgin River, though at times it seems that way when Jack buys him out of the bar to allow him to set up his own restaurant.
After a positive review in Food & Wine, Jack's Bar becomes inundated with guests hoping to try Preacher's menu and soon, Preacher wants to expand to floor space in the bar to allow for more guests. But Jack isn't convinced.
Mindful that he has a baby on the way and just hiring Clay to help on the farm, Jack can't afford to shut the bar for something that might not work out. And so, the best friends come to an agreement that Jack will buy Preacher out of his share of the bar so he can begin his next project.
"Anyone that’s familiar with Preacher’s journey from Seasons 1 to 6, he’s always put everyone’s needs ahead of his own," Lawrence told Tudum. "For this season, he’s had this moment where he’s like, ‘You know what? Preacher first.’ Preacher has goals, growth, desire that he wants to achieve, and this is something that he wants to entertain."
What happens between Doc and Hope?
Oh, Hope and Doc – will they ever see eye-to-eye for one whole season?
Season 7 ends with Hope and Doc having a massive fight, when Doc reveals that he reached out the Grace Valley mobile clinic for help with Mel and Jack's baby and admits he is interested on how they can work together in the future.
Hope grows frustrated at this, especially given she asked for signatures during the Founder's Day Celebration to stop outside businesses setting up in Virgin River.
This issue between Hope and Doc is something they will continue to work through in season 8, and the biggest question will be if they can make up.
Smith told Tudum: "It’s not good. Doc is relegated to returning back to the clinic, which is where he was living at the beginning of the series. Hope has found herself back at Roland’s ranch, where she learns all of this interesting backstory about her father.
"There’s definitely a huge rift between Doc and Hope, and I think a big question in season 8 is, 'Will they find their way back to each other?'"
