The Bears Were Out Watching Center Prospect Sam Hecht at Kansas State’s Pro Day

Yours truly is adding Kansas State center Sam Hecht to my list of potential Chicago Bears prospect fits in the 2026 NFL Draft.

This tweet from the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs opened my eyes to a new potential Bears target in a way that also serves as a reminder that this front office would be wise to unearth a center prospect in the upcoming NFL Draft:

I'm told the #Bears had a large contingent of scouts/coaches at the Kansas State pro day on Tuesday with a focus on center Sam Hecht. Hecht is just one of many prospects I'd expect the team to get a close look at in the pre-draft process.

The surprising retirement of Pro Bowl center Drew Dalman opened up a major need for the Bears. And while the team was quick to pivot to make a trade with the New England Patriots to acquire Garrett Bradbury, there is still a long-term need at the position. Keep in mind that Bradbury, who turns 31 in June, is set to play out the final year of a two-year contract he signed with the Patriots last offseason. In other words, this position is one where the Bears could seek a draft prospect worth grooming to start in 2027.

HERE’S WHAT THE BEARS ARE GETTING IN GARRETT BRADBURY

Chicago could follow the blueprint New England created this past season. After signing Bradbury to a two-year deal last March, the Patriots selected Georgia’s Jared Wilson in the third round (95th overall) of the 2025 NFL Draft. Eleven months later, the Pats dealt Bradbury to clear the path for Wilson to take the starting center role. Ideally, the Bears could do something similar. Hence, someone such as Kansas State center prospect Sam Hecht is someone we should get to know.

Let’s get to know 2026 NFL Draft center prospect Sam Hecht

Sam Hecht joined Kansas State as a walk-on in 2021, but finished his career starting the Wildcats’ last 25 games at center. Hecht’s play in the middle opened the door for him to get an invite to the East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl. Considering the Bears’ history with drafting Senior Bowl prospects during Ryan Poles’ time as general manager, Hecht’s name is one to keep an eye on when NFL analysts and pundits put together their draft boards — and I can understand why:

Kansas State C Sam Hecht is so quick out of his stance and such a fluid mover he reminds me a lot of Bears C Drew DalmanI had some concerns about his play strength but he helped himself with a strong Senior Bowl. 6'4 297 lbs. Day 2 pick & potentially OC1#BuildingTheBoard pic.twitter.com/TFQxi199ZW

Kansas State OC Sam Hecht (6-4 1/4, 297) is a developmental sleeper coming out of a strong Senior Bowl week ??Zero-star recruit; Originally a Walk-On?25 starts; 1st & 2nd Team All-Big 12?No panic to him; athletic feet; technically coached pic.twitter.com/JP2VWrKZsk

NFL Network Lead Draft Writer Eric Edholm has Sam Hecht as the No. 99-ranked prospect in his most recent big board post. Edholm writes that Hecht blocks with sound technique and compares him favorably to Indianapolis Colts center Tanor Bortolini. That’s fun!

There will come a time when we do a deeper dive into Hecht’s NFL Draft profile, prospect status, and potential fit as a plausible target for the Bears. In the meantime, I found this overview from NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein (via Hecht’s pre-draft profile) to be informative:

Hecht lacks ideal mass and length but it will be hard to find a center in this year’s draft with better technique. He plays with well-placed inside hands that help maximize his leverage and core strength. All schemes are available to him but his athleticism will shine when activated in space. He stays sticky to blocks once he connects, but his lack of length will put him on the wrong side of the battle from time to time in both the run and pass phases. Hecht needs to add more muscle mass to his frame but he has the consistency and tape of a future starter.

This write-up reads like something I would have expected Drew Dalman’s profile to look like. It also reads like the profile of a possible draft target who could use their rookie season as a de facto redshirt year, learn behind a veteran center, build up muscle in the weight room, and develop without being rushed into the lineup before stepping into a starter’s role in Year 2. To be clear, I’m not saying to get too attached to Sam Hecht as a prospect. He is just one of many centers I expect the Bears to kick the tires on ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. But there is stuff to like with Hecht, whose future is certainly intriguing.
