As more and more audiences continue to flock to streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu and HBO Max, a new study from the Pew Research Center revealed some startling truths about America's struggling movie theater industry.
According to the new data from the research center, only 53% of U.S. adults said they visited a movie theater to watch a new film in the prior 12 months. Even more tellingly, 7% of survey response replied that they had never seen a movie in a theater at all.
The study's findings point to an alarming downward trend for nationwide movie theaters, many of whom are still struggling to make ends meet with pandemic-related closures and increasing audience demand for instant streaming content.
According to Nash Information Services, ticket sales for 2025 were roughly half what they were during the peak years of their popularity in 2002, dropping from 1.6 billion sold tickets that year to 769.2 million tickets this past year.
While Variety has pointed out that the theater industry is still in a slow recovery process from the devastating days of the pandemic, the data shows the stark divide between a business struggling to keep up with the times as audiences' consumption of content continues to rapidly change.
The Pew Research Center's survey also managed to explore the key audience demographics that made up their research study. About two-thirds of adults ages 18 to 29 said they had seen a movie in theaters in 2025, compared to 39% of survey participants 65 and older.
Those on the upper income threshold were also found to attend movies at a higher rate (64%) than those from middle-income ($57) and lower-income (43%) backgrounds.
Additionally, the survey found that Hispanic adults were the most likely to attend a movie in the theater (at 59%), compared to white adults (53%) and Black adults (49%) who participated in the same survey.
