The Trump enabler under military guard – who still can’t shield him from Epstein

The Donald Trump official who became the face of efforts to shield him from backlash over the Jeffrey Epstein files has been forced to relocate to a military base following a rise in threats, according to a report.

Pam Bondi, the attorney general, quietly relocated to a base in the Washington DC area after an increase in threats from drug cartels and critics of her handling of the Epstein files, according to US media.

Bondi moved from a city apartment to the base within the past month after federal law enforcement officials flagged threats, including from drug cartels and critics of her handling of the Epstein case, according to a report from The New York Times, citing people familiar with the situation.

Bondi joins other members of the Trump administration who have moved to a military base following threats from criminals, protesters and foreign actors. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former homeland security secretary Kristi Noem and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have all relocated due to security concerns.

There was an uptick in threats to Bondi following the capture of the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, in January according to a senior official, the report said.

Bondi was one of the key individuals defending the US action. Bondi said the US captured Maduro so that he would “face justice” for alleged weapon and drug offences, but international law experts have questioned the legality of the operation, saying the US may have violated international statutes governing the use of force.

“All personnel involved acted professionally, decisively, and in strict accordance with US law and established protocols,” Bondi said in a statement.

A long-time ally of Trump, Bondi – for now – remains in his good books. But the growing outrage over her handling of the Epstein files is unlikely to abate.

Public anger at Noem’s behaviour as the face of Trump’s immigration crackdown led to her removal from her post. And as Americans’ fury grows over the administration’s lack of transparency on the Epstein issue, it is Bondi who is coming in for much of the criticism – and she who could be the next sacrifice to protect the President.

The Epstein files are not going away

The Epstein files have been the most damaging controversy for Bondi. As the head of Trump’s Department of Justice (DoJ), she has been the face of his administration’s efforts to prevent the publication of documents relating to investigations of the late paedophile financier.

The DoJ only began releasing the documents after Congress forced it to when it passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act last year.

Since then, however, many files have still not been released, with the Department claiming many of them are too sensitive to release or contain victims’ personal information. That claim comes despite files being released revealing victims’ names, whilst redacting the names of alleged abusers.

The Epstein issue has prompted fractures within Trump’s Maga movement which has been calling for the release of the files, as well as within American society more widely. As Trump has tried to deflect from his own previous association with Epstein, Bondi has become the face of the administration’s obstructions.

“Pam Bondi could not be less popular for being such a loyal acolyte of Trump and being seen to protect his position with the slow and heavily redacted drip feed of Epstein material,” Mark Shanahan, associate professor of political engagement at the University of Surrey, told The i Paper.

Last week, Bondi was subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee to testify over the Epstein files, with five Republicans voting with Democrats to force her to do so.

The Republican-majority committee is investigating the Epstein files and the DoJ’s handling of the case.

Last month, in a House Judiciary Committee hearing, she went on the offensive, using her appearance to attack the Democrats instead of engaging with questions about the Epstein files.

Democratic representative Jamie Raskin told Bondi “As attorney general, you are siding with the perpetrators, and you’re ignoring the victims. That will be your legacy unless you act quickly to change course. You’re running a massive Epstein cover-up right out of the Department of Justice.”

Shanahan said: “When she appeared before Congress recently, she didn’t do her case much good. She appeared to be more like a presidential attack dog attacking the Democrat opposition than the leading judicial figure within the government.”

Republican politicians have broken ranks with the President to criticise Bondi and the DoJ.

Republican Representative Nancy Mace wrote on X: “AG Bondi claims the DoJ has released all of the Epstein files. The record is clear: they have not.”

She called the Epstein case “one of the greatest cover-ups in American history” and said that despite the DOJ’s latest release “we still don’t have the full truth.”

“Videos are missing. Audio is missing. Logs are missing. There are millions more documents out there,” she said.

The Epstein files remain a crisis for Trump, and have been one of the few issues that has made a dent in his Maga base.

Trump and his team are coming under increasing fire from the public more widely too, with polls showing growing disapproval of the President.

“We tend to look at Maga as one homogeneous group, but it’s not. There were a lot of people who were very keen to see transparency around Epstein,” Shanahan said. “There are some who really believed that it was going to reveal this huge cabal conspiracy led by [former Secretary of State] Hillary Clinton, which is a complete and utter fallacy.

“But there are other people who are now really questioning what Trump’s role was within this, and is he, through his administration, through Bondi, just protecting his own circle of business acquaintances and rich friends?

“That doesn’t play well in middle America where an awful lot of people are struggling just from paycheck to paycheck… America is not feeling wealthy, but the wealthy seem to be being overly protected, particularly around Epstein.”

But whilst Bondi continues to fight in Trump’s corner, she seems set to stay.

Shanahan said his advice to her to keep her job would be “double down, deny, deflect. It’s been the Trump mandate all the way through, or the Trump mantra I should say. If she follows that Trump playbook she will stay in place longer.”

Bondi “has not mucked up in the same way that Kristi Noem did and she is very much Trump’s shield around Epstein,” said Shanahan. “While she has utility for Trump, he will keep her there. As soon as she becomes a liability, he will have no hesitation whatsoever throwing her under the bus.”
