Hamilton confirms Ferrari will debut rotating rear wing in Shanghai

Ferrari is set to unleash this weekend one of this season’s most striking innovations – and it’s ready to spin its way into the spotlight in Shanghai.

According to Lewis Hamilton, the Scuderia will debut its ingenious rotating rear wing during the Chinese Grand Prix, marking the first race outing for a design that has drawn widespread scrutiny across the F1 paddock.

The unusual aerodynamic concept first appeared during pre-season testing last month in Bahrain, when Ferrari ran a rear wing whose upper flap rotates a full 180 degrees – a dramatic visual shift made possible by the sport’s new, more flexible active-aero rules.

Now, after its limited trial in testing, the controversial idea is ready to face the pressures of a race weekend.

    The ‘Macarena’ Moves to China

Hamilton confirmed that Ferrari plans to run the rotating wing in Shanghai practice as the team continues its aggressive development push early in the season.

“I don't think there's any, we did a full day or so on the wing so I think we did,” Hamilton said when asked whether he had already noticed advantages from the design.

“But we got all the running needed for it and I'm so grateful for the team because it was actually supposed to be later down the line and they worked really hard to develop it and get it brought here.

“So that for me is just great to see that the team are fighting, the team are pushing and chasing and really working overtime back at the factory to be able to bring upgrades because that's the name of the game.

“I think last year, I didn't get to see the team's full potential in that mode because we were focused on this year's cars and I don't know if it has an official name. Someone said Macarena and I have no idea why.”

The design’s potential advantages remain a talking point. Under the new aerodynamic regulations, teams have far more freedom than they once did under the strict Drag Reduction System (DRS) rules.

That means Ferrari can experiment with multiple wing angles to balance cornering downforce and straight-line efficiency.

Hamilton himself admits the benefits aren’t yet fully clear from the cockpit.

“You can see it in the mirror. So I'm looking forward to seeing what it will do here,” he said.

Ferrari will first evaluate the concept during the single practice session in Shanghai – this weekend is a Sprint format event – before deciding whether to continue using it through qualifying and the race.

    Chasing the Early Benchmark

The “Macarena” wing experiment arrives at a moment when Ferrari is already showing promising early form.

At the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, the Scuderia finished third and fourth, emerging as the closest challenger to a dominant showing from Mercedes.

Mercedes’ advantage was particularly evident in qualifying, where its drivers enjoyed a sizeable pace margin.

Hamilton believes catching up will depend heavily on how quickly teams evolve their cars under the brand-new regulations.

“I think it's really dependent on development, the development rate is pretty steep for everyone at the moment so people are going to be interested to see who brings upgrades over these next races,” he said.

“They do have a big… I mean you saw in qualifying it was eight tenths or something like that in the quali lap, and in the race I think it was between four and five tenths when they were in clear air which is a huge gap.

“So it's really going to be interesting to see the development, we're going to try and catch them up and I believe we can but I don't know if it's going to be a sure thing.”

For Ferrari, the rotating wing may not be a guaranteed breakthrough – but in a development race moving at full speed, even bold ideas could make the difference.

And in Shanghai, one of the season’s most intriguing technical gambles is finally ready to take flight.
