Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk held talks with Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Rostom to review the workflow of joint development projects financed locally and in partnership with international development partners.
During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed performance reports on ongoing projects, stressing the need to adhere to implementation timelines and maximize the use of available financing.
Talks also focused on mechanisms to empower Egyptian farmers, improve agricultural productivity, and link production with agro-processing stages to ensure sustainable incomes and reduce crop losses.
The ministers said agro-processing represents a key driver of growth, noting that moving from raw production to processing can reduce the final cost of products, cut losses in strategic crops through integrated storage and processing systems, and increase the added value of Egyptian products in domestic and international markets.
They also agreed on the importance of linking agricultural development projects with villages included in the presidential “Decent Life” (Haya Karima) initiative to ensure integrated services for citizens and transform targeted villages into advanced production hubs that help raise incomes and improve living standards in rural areas.
Farouk said the interests of small farmers remain a top priority for the ministry, noting that current efforts focus on providing technical and financial support to ensure sustainable agricultural production, in addition to developing irrigation systems, strengthening agricultural cooperatives, and transferring modern farming practices to farmers to improve their incomes.
He added that expanding agro-processing in rural Egypt is a social necessity to create real job opportunities for youth and rural women. The ministry, he said, is coordinating with the planning ministry to remove obstacles facing small farmers in the sector and provide facilities to establish processing units that complement agricultural activity and help reduce waste.
Rostom said coordination between the two ministries comes within the framework of ongoing monitoring of the national project to develop the Egyptian countryside under the “Decent Life” initiative, one of the government’s top investment priorities.
He noted that the first phase of the project is nearing completion ahead of launching the second phase in line with presidential directives, adding that the initiative has contributed to the development of a large number of villages and residential clusters and reflects the scale of state investments aimed at improving living standards and creating jobs for rural families.
