City Council declares March “social work month”

The Tuscaloosa City Council declared March “Social Work Month” on Tuesday and honored a local high school student’s acceptance into aviation school.

Schnavia Smith Hatcher, dean of the University’s School of Social Work spoke at the meeting, praising the council for the declaration.

“Celebrating a profession that does not simply respond to challenges, as you’ve heard in the proclamation, but we focus on transforming lives, communities and systems,” Smith Hatcher said.

The council also recognized Parker J. Evans, a senior at Central High School, for his acceptance into the Tuskegee University aviation science program. He was one of 30 students accepted out of over 400 applicants.

“I’m very honored and humbled to receive this,” Evans said.

Thomas Jones, principal of Central High School, said Evans “is a product of Tuscaloosa City Schools when everyone is working together” and he would go on to do great things.

The council also announced the 40th Annual Sakura Festival & Haiku Contest which will take place on Saturday, March 28 at the Snow Hinton Park Pavilion.

The University’s Office for Academic Affairs will host the event. Shelley Dorrill, executive director of Tuscaloosa Sister Cities International, spoke at the meeting.

“Sakura is a celebration of the cherry blossom, but it’s really a celebration of how beauty is fleeting, we need to enjoy life, it’s an element of spring, rebirth.” said Dorrill.
