The Obamas Announce They Are Heading to Broadway

President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, are heading to Broadway this spring.

It was announced on Wednesday that the former president and first lady are producing the revival of Proof through their production company, Higher Ground. The Tony-winning play follows Catherine, a young woman grieving the death of her father, Robert, a brilliant but mentally ill mathematics professor. Don Cheadle and Ayo Edebiri will be making their Broadway debuts as Robert and Catherine, respectively. The revival will be produced by Mike Bosner and directed and co-produced by Thomas Kail.

"To bring this landmark play back to Broadway with Ayo, Don, Tommy and Mike at the helm is an extraordinary privilege, and we couldn’t be more proud to be part of this production," the Obamas said in a statement Wednesday. “Proof is exactly the kind of story Higher Ground was built to champion, a play that asks profound questions about brilliance, doubt, and what we inherit from the people we love most."

Founded in 2018 by the Obamas, Higher Ground Productions is an entertainment company that produces various films, TV shows, documentaries and podcasts. Since its establishment, the company has earned three Oscar nominations and one win (for their documentary American Factory), six Emmys and three Grammy Awards. In 2025, Higher Ground started producing IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson, a podcast hosted by Michelle Obama and her brother, Craig Robinson.

"We’re thrilled to welcome Higher Ground as partners on Proof and to have their creative vision and passion behind this production," Bosner and Kail said in a statement. "Their impeccable taste in storytelling and community-building makes them ideal collaborators for this revival."

Following an off-Broadway premiere in May 2000, Proof transferred to Broadway on Oct 24, 2000, where it ran for 917 performances before closing on January 5, 2003. In 2001, it won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play. Two decades ago, it was directed by John Madden, while the cast starred Gwyneth Paltrow as Catherine, Ronald Pickup as Robert, Sara Stewart as Claire and Richard Coyle as Hal.

Proof will be playing for 16 weeks at the Booth Theater in New York City starting March 31 for previews, before its official opening night on April 16. Tickets are now on sale and range from $99 to $449.
