Chelsea have a mammoth task on their hands to stay in the UEFA Champions League after losing 5-2 at holders Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their last-16 tie.
Bradley Barcola gave PSG an early lead at the Parc Des Princes, but after Malo Gusto equalised, Ousmane Dembélé quickly restored the hosts’ lead. Enzo Fernández levelled early in the second half, only for Vitinha to put PSG in front again.
A brace from substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia perhaps made the scoreline look worse than it should have been, as Chelsea were PSG’s equal for large periods in the French capital, but it was a typically ruthless display from Luis Enrique’s men.
There remains another 90 minutes in London next week to navigate, but PSG will have enjoyed getting some revenge on Chelsea after they were beaten by the Premier League side in last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup final.
It was an energetic opening from both, but it was the Parisians who took the lead in the 10th minute.
Dembélé’s cross from the right found João Neves, who headed the ball down to Barcola to fire into the top corner with his left foot.
Dembélé almost made it two when he jinked down the left and hit a fierce shot at goal, but Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen was able to tip it onto the crossbar.
Barcola also forced a smart save from Jörgensen in the 25th minute when he cut inside from the left, but just two minutes later, Chelsea were level.
Fernández saw Gusto running into acres of space down the right and played a long ball into his path. The right-back’s shot should probably have been saved by PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov but the Russian saw the ball squirm past him and into the net.
It was only Gusto’s third goal in 123 games in all competitions for Chelsea, and his first away from home (55th away game).
Safonov made amends when he saved from Cole Palmer, and not just because he prevented Chelsea from taking the lead, but because from the resulting counter-attack, PSG scored again.
Désiré Doué slid in Dembélé, who raced towards goal from the halfway line. Wesley Fofana was able to get back, but the 2025 Ballon d’Or winner was able to get a shot away, that clipped Fofana’s foot and zipped past Jörgensen.
It was a slow start to the second half from both teams, until Chelsea equalised in the 57th minute. Pedro Neto stole the ball on the left after some sloppy play from the hosts and ran at the PSG defence, before cutting it back to Fernández to slam the ball past Safonov.
It marked the first time that Fernández had recorded both a goal and assist in a Champions League game, and was no less than Chelsea deserved.
Luis Enrique turned to his bench and brought Kvaratskhelia on for Doué just after the hour as he looked for his team to take the lead for a third time. Somewhat surprisingly, though, a few minutes later he also took off Dembélé for Lee Kang-In.
PSG did find that third goal, though, and it was Vitinha in the 74th minute who got it.
To continue this week’s trend of Premier League second-choice goalkeepers making a bit of a mess of things, Jörgensen accidentally passed the ball to Barcola, who played it to Kvaratskhelia and he found Vitinha, who lobbed Jörgensen to put PSG ahead once more.
João Pedro momentarily thought he’d equalised, but the assistant referee’s flag denied the in-form forward, and a VAR check showed he had been offside in the build-up.
For the first time on the night, though, PSG went two goals ahead, and it was a stunning strike that led to it. Kvaratskhelia cut inside from the left and bent a superb effort into the far corner past the despairing dive of Jörgensen. And just after a bizarre incident in stoppage time when a ball boy went down dramatically as Neto tried to retrieve a ball from him, Kvaratskhelia struck again to make it five.
PSG raced away down the right with Achraf Hakimi, who pulled the ball back to the Georgian to finish, and possibly put the tie to bed before next week’s return leg at Stamford Bridge.
