Copper Leaf Brewery closes as local breweries face rising costs and evolving consumer demands

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Copper Leaf Brewery in Pittsford is closing its doors for good, following a trend of local craft breweries shutting down. In the past year, about eight craft breweries in the area have ceased operations.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with Paul Leone, executive director of the New York Brewer’s Association, about the challenges facing craft breweries today.

Paul Leone explained, “The cost of goods is going up in breweries and in restaurants and all sorts of businesses right now. And so to keep up with that, breweries continually have to evolve. And just like any other business, some aren’t able to do that for whatever reason.”

Leone noted that consumers are spending less on going out and are seeking more from breweries than just beer. “It used to be where a brewery could just open up and serve beer, and you’d come in and have a few beers and a bag of pretzels. But it’s not that way anymore,” he said. “I think breweries need to become a third space. They have to offer food. They have to offer events.”

Evan Flury, head brewer at The Spotted Octopus, discussed how they are adapting to meet customer demands. “In the summer we see a lot of seltzer sales. So we’ve been making seltzers for 3 or 4 years now. And, you know, if we didn’t do that, I mean, I can see a lot of people would be going elsewhere,” Flury said.

Flury also mentioned the impact of external factors on their business. “Tariffs from Europe very much so did increase the price of imported grain… the Ukraine war started and grain prices went up because Ukraine grew a lot of grain,” he explained.

Leone emphasized the importance of community support for local businesses. “I think that what’s really important, in the brewing industry and any local businesses, these are folks that are local and these are folks that are paying taxes in Rochester. And the money stays here. If you want them to stay, you’ve got to go out and visit,” he said.

Despite the closures, Leone expects new breweries to continue opening in the Rochester area over the next year.

News10NBC reached out to Copper Leaf Brewing for more information on their closure but has not received a response.
