Sheryl Lee Ralph Says Timothée Chalamet Was Mad at His Mother When Making Controversial Ballet and Opera Comments

Sheryl Lee Ralph is weighing in on the recent controversy with Timothée Chalamet's comments on ballet and opera.

The actress and Abbott Elementary star spoke to People at the TIME Women Of the Year Gala on Tuesday, March 10, and expressed that she has "always loved" the Ballet of The Dance Theatre Harlem.

"The Dance Theatre of Harlem always went above and beyond to show that the arts were not just for some people, but the arts were for all people," she said.

Ralph commented on the controversial comments made by Chalamet where he said "no one cares about this anymore."

"And I think when young Timothée Chalamet spoke about ballet and all of that, he was just mad at his mother that day," Ralph said. "He was just mad at his sister that day. He was just mad at his aunt that day. He didn't mean what he says, because I know that boy has loved a few ballerinas. Yes, he has."

Chalamet's mother, sister, and grandmother all come from a ballet background which contributed to the backlash he received.

Ralph is not the only celebrity to speak on Chalamet's comments, professional ballet dancer Misty Copeland said, "First I have to say that it’s very interesting that he invited me to be a part of promoting Marty Supreme with respect to my art form. But I think that it’s important that we acknowledge that, yes, this is an art form that’s not ‘popular’ and a part of pop culture as movies are. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have enduring relevance in culture."

Musician Doja Cat also responded to the controversy in a recent TikTok video where she said, "Hey, by the way, opera is 400 years old, ballet is 500 years old. Somebody named Tim-oh-tay Cha-lam-et had the nerve — big guy, by the way — had the nerve to say, on camera, that nobody cares about it." She then said she was "not proud" of how she criticized Chalamet and admitted she had never seen ballet or opera performed live.
