Candice Bergen admits she doesn't watch much television these days. Most of her screentime is dedicated to the news, very much in line with the woman who brought Murphy Brown to life, one of the most political sitcoms in TV history. But there is one show that the five-time Emmy winner does tune in for: Shrinking."I watched the show, and I fell in love with the show," the 79-year-old tells Parade in an exclusive interview about the Apple TV series, "with the truthfulness and the intelligence and the humor. Everyone in the cast, I think, is perfect. And so I said to my agent, 'I want to do the show. Can you get me on it?' I had to sort of crawl onto this show."

Of course, when you get the request from TV royalty to be on your show, you have no choice but to say yes. So that's what Jason Segel, Bill Lawrence and company did, bringing her on in Episode 7 of Season 3. Bergen plays Constance, the doting mother of Derek (Ted McGinley), who pays a visit following his heart surgery in the previous episode. And, in a classic comedy trope, we see the latest in apparently many instances she's butted heads with daughter-in-law Liz (Christa Miller)."I had met Christa years before at a dinner in LA and liked her very much," Bergen says about working with the Scrubs star. "So I was very happy to see her again. And it's a lovely set to come on to. They're a very welcoming and inclusive set. It's not intimidating; it's very friendly. And when you invite yourself, you kind of toe the line."

Fox Was ‘Very Strange’Despite Constance's passive-aggressive tone to Liz for the majority of the episode, the two finally hash it out over a disagreement involving Liz's son Connor (Gavin Lewis). At one point, she meets Paul (Harrison Ford), venting to him about the frustrations of younger generations not taking the advice accrued from all of their life experience. And, while this was the first time Constance had ever met Paul, in actuality, Bergen had a chance encounter with the legendary actor decades ago."I'd met Harrison 100 years ago when he was working as a carpenter," she says. "Because he was an actor who was having trouble getting work, and he was a very good carpenter. And I was at Joan Didion and John Dunn's house for dinner, and Harrison was there with his hammer, I think. And I met him. So I had a brief meeting with him at their house. And I'm a huge Harrison fan. I think Harrison is a national treasure."When asked if she would drop by on any other current shows for a guest appearance, Bergen mentions Hacks (though she admits she is not caught up on the hit Jean Smart series). Though she goes on to admit, "I can't keep inviting myself on shows! It's a little embarrassing." It's safe to say, whether being the inviter or the invitee, any chance to have Candice Bergen on our screens is a welcome one.
