Dozens killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon, including Syrians

Dozens of Lebanese were killed and others injured in Israeli airstrikes targeting several areas across Lebanon since dawn on Wednesday, March 11.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health said Israeli strikes on the town of al-Shihabiya in southern Lebanon killed seven people and injured 11 others. Another Israeli strike on Ali al-Nahri in the Bekaa Valley, eastern Lebanon, wounded five people.

Lebanon’s Civil Defense said an Israeli strike on Tamnin in the Bekaa Valley killed seven people and injured 18 others.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that Israeli fighter jets carried out airstrikes on multiple areas across the country, killing 21 Lebanese and injuring 26 others.

Three civilians, including a paramedic, were also killed in an airstrike on Hannawiya in southern Lebanon, according to the agency. It added that one person was killed and two others were injured in Zalaya in the Bekaa Valley, while another person was killed and eight others injured in Israeli shelling on al-Housh.

In Qana, southern Lebanon, Israeli strikes killed five people and injured five others. Three young men were also killed in al-Sharqiya after an airstrike targeted the house where they were staying, while a paramedic was killed in a strike on Kfartabnit.

    Syrian victims

Ten Syrians were killed and seven others injured in Israeli airstrikes carried out by the Israeli army in Lebanon.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes targeted a building in Tamnin al-Tahta in the Bekaa Valley where a Syrian family was living. The strike killed 10 people and injured five others.

An Israeli drone also struck Baraachit in the Bint Jbeil district, southern Lebanon, wounding two Syrians, one of them critically, according to the agency. The two injured men were taken to Tebnin Governmental Hospital.

Syrians in Lebanon have been living under difficult conditions amid the ongoing military confrontation between the Israeli army and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which has continued since March 2.

On March 7, Syria’s General Authority for Land and Sea Borders and Customs said that 65,000 Syrians had returned from Lebanon since the start of March due to the recent Israeli escalation.

    Hundreds of thousands displaced

Lebanon’s Minister of Social Affairs said around 780,000 displaced people have been registered since the start of what she described as the “Israeli aggression,” including about 120,000 currently staying in shelters.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Risk Management Unit affiliated with the Lebanese government said the number of people displaced by the war had reached 759,300, including more than 122,000 staying in official shelters supervised by the government.

    Yesterday was no different

The previous day was also difficult for Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Fifteen Syrians were injured in an Israeli strike targeting Kawthariyet al-Riz in southern Lebanon on Monday night, March 9.

The incident came hours after a similar attack in which 11 Syrian workers were injured when an Israeli drone targeted them on the outskirts of Yahmar al-Shaqif in southern Lebanon on March 8.

According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, Lebanese Red Cross paramedics, backed by a Lebanese army patrol, carried out a risky humanitarian operation that lasted several hours. They managed to evacuate the wounded and transfer them to al-Najda al-Shaabiya Hospital in Nabatieh for treatment.

The workers had been unloading a shipment of chickens from a pickup truck at a farm when they were targeted. Three of them managed to crawl away from the site, while the remaining 11 injured workers stayed there for more than five hours before being evacuated.

The agency added that the evacuation required communication with the “mechanism committee” and prior approval because of the dangerous security situation in the area.

The escalation in Lebanon followed Hezbollah’s announcement that it had entered the war alongside Iran in what it described as a “support war,” about 48 hours after the confrontation erupted between Israel and the United States on one side and Iran on the other.

That intervention was followed by a broad Israeli escalation, including heavy airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, triggering waves of displacement as bombardment continued on sites linked to the group.
