The ‘Transit Trouser’ Controversy That’s Dividing Travel Influencers Across the Internet

There’s a big talk online, especially on TikTok, where travel influencers have varying opinions about the type of pants to wear on an airplane. This controversy is surrounded by one simple style of pants: long, wide-legged bottoms. Brands like Aritzia, Athleta and online-favorite Halara have popularized these airport-outfit favorites thanks to their ability to offer both style and comfort over the course of long-haul flights. Of course, as opinions go on social media, people are either strongly for the wide legged pants or strongly against them, and those on opposing teams are clashing with each other.

In one video created by @thenatalieway1, an account geared towards chic travel for women, she shares that she not only would never ever wear a pair of long, loose pants on an airplane, but she doesn’t tolerate it from other travelers, as well.

This opinion of hers stems from one simple reason–the state of the bathroom floors on airplanes. She alludes to the fact that they are often very dirty, and she can’t imagine letting her pant bottoms touch the bathroom floor.

Wide-leg pants at the airport? Yes-even with the bathroom situation. If you choose lightweight, quick-dry transit trousers, you can wear them on the plane and again on your trip- after some quick travel laundry. Now, on the other side of the spectrum, we have @the_travelista sharing her opinion. Josie, the owner of the account, gears her content towards packing light and curating travel outfits. Josie begins the video by saying that she has heard many women complain about wearing wide legged pants to the airport, simply because of the dirty bathroom issue.

However, she doesn’t think that this needs to be something that will stop you from wearing wide legged pants. Ultimately, this style of pants is extremely comfortable to travel in, and you shouldn’t negate them just because you’re afraid of the bottom of the pants getting dirty.

Instead, Josie shares a few tips to help keep your pants clean when using the bathroom on your travel day. You can tuck the bottom of the pants into your socks or boots if that’s the shoe you chose to wear.

Other options could be to simply lift the bottom of the pants up and scrunch them up towards your thighs, keeping them away from the floor. Josie also explains that your “transit trouser” as she calls it should be something light and fast drying, that way you can wash it and hang it to dry when you get to your final destination.

As A Travel-Pro Myself, This Controversy Is Silly

I’ve traveled to over 40 countries myself, lived on the road on a Broadway tour for a year, and am constantly running from airports to train stations and everything in between. I, personally, would rather be comfortable in what I’m wearing than stressing over the bottom of my pants getting dirty. Let’s be honest–the bottom of your pants are extremely far from your face. Who cares if they get dirty? Also, many personal items get dirty in an airport, all you need to do is clean them after.

Also, why is this only controversial for airports and airplanes, specifically? Most public restrooms have dirty floors. If this is really a problem for people, they should just stop wearing wide legged pants all together, unless they simply aren’t going to use the bathroom while wearing them. Ultimately, I think this is incredibly silly, and people shouldn’t be stressing about their pants getting dirty at the airport. It’s the airport, your clothes will get dirty. You will survive, I promise! Below I'm wearing favorite wide legged airport pants. They’re light, easy to wash, and I wear the multiple times during a trip. Sue me!!
