How many tornadoes touched down in Chicago area? Meteorologists stunned by rare wave of storms

Extensive damage was reported in northeast Illinois and portions of northwest Indiana after fierce storms roared through on Tuesday evening, destroying a number of buildings and forcing residents from their homes.

Numerous tornado touchdowns were reported across the region, including near the village of Aroma Park, just miles away from Kankakee city limits.

According to the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office, a tornado touched down south of the city, near the Kankakee County Fairgrounds and appeared to have crossed the Kankakee River before eventually moving into Aroma Park.

Over the state line, in the community of Lake Village, Indiana, damage assessments and cleanup efforts were underway after a tornado was reported.

As of late Monday, the tornadoes hadn’t been confirmed by the National Weather Service. The agency typically conducts damage assessments in the subsequent days to determine the path and strength of any possible tornadoes.

The tornadoes, and the many thunderstorms that occurred Tuesday night, were a rare wave of storms, according to NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologists.

“How many severe thunderstorm warnings are we looking at?” NBC 5 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Brant Miller said during the height of severe weather coverage on Tuesday evening “It’s unbelievable. Look. Look at this activity, Iisha.”

“For this time of the year, this is really odd by the way,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott said.

“And the fact that we thought that this would be confined south,” Miller stated.

Miller noted previous forecasts showed the most severe storms wouldn’t reach as far north, but the National Weather Service changed its projections. The storms occurred during what the NWS classified as a “moderate” threat level – a level 4 out of 5 rarely seen in the Chicago area.

A dramatic temperature contrast partially fueled the storms, with temperatures in the 70s south of interstate 80 and readings sitting in the 40s in northern communities, meteorologists said.

Following the tornadoes, the storm threat wasn’t immediately over.

Severe thunderstorms were expected through the nighttime hours before subsiding.
