Scandal Star Says He Had a Love Affair With Co-Worker

Actor and producer Dan Bucatinsky, who has starred in popular shows like Scandal, Hacks, and The Comeback, recently shared some details about a past romance.

During an appearance on a March 2026 episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Sony Music Entertainment’s podcast, Dinner's on Me, Bucatinsky said that he was in "a love affair" with a co-worker at the Cannon Theater right before he met his now-husband, screenwriter and director Don Roos. The couple wed in 2008.

"When I met Don, I was in a love affair, an absolute head over heels love affair with another guy who was working as the general manager of Forever Plaid," said Bucatinsky.

Bucatinsky said that the romance "was totally top-secret because [the other person] had a long-term person in his life." In addition, Bucatinsky said he took issue with the individual's decision to have a relationship with two people.

"I was the other man. And I couldn't understand how one person could love two people. I was like, 'You clearly have to leave this person,'" said Bucatinsky on the podcast episode. "'I can't. I can't. You can't feel this way about me, and I feel this way about you and you still have somebody else.' Like I couldn't wrap my brain around it. And he was like, 'I believe I can love two people at the same time.'"

Bucatinsky said the relationship ended after the individual left to be the general manager for a national tour of Cats.

"He left town and I said, 'You're leaving town. Don't call me. It's too painful. Don't ever call me. Don't ever reach out to me. I need to mourn,'" said the actor.

Dan Bucatinsky Opened up About the Success of 'Scandal'

Bucatinsky appeared as his character, James Novak, throughout the first four seasons of Scandal. While recording the Dinner's On Me podcast, Bucatinsky shared that he was "connected to" the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, because they had adopted their children around the same time. He said that due to their relationship, she was interested in having him on Scandal, which had a 7-season run until 2018.

"I mean it was very good luck, but it wasn't just luck that landed me on Scandal because she and I had a relationship she wanted to see there be a writer, a gay dad on that show in some way and she worked it into the show," said Bucatinsky, whose Scandal character also adopted a child during season 2.

Bucatinsky also noted that he was 47 when he was cast to play James.

"The crazy success of that show was 20 years after I came to LA. So the kind of success I wished I could have when I got here at 27, happened for me at 47," said Bucatinsky.

James gets murdered towards the end of the Scandal's third season. In a July 2023 interview on The Brett Allan Show, Bucatinsky said he didn't expect his character to die and that he would have to leave Scandal.

"When I left Scandal, I was devastated. It was the best job I've ever had. I loved the material, I loved that character, and I loved my castmates, as I still do today. So I was in a little bit of a tailspin," said the actor in the 2023 interview.
