Syrian army weighs response “options” to Hezbollah shelling in Serghaya

The Syrian army’s Operations Authority announced early Tuesday, March 10, that artillery shells landed on Syrian territory near the town of Serghaya (western Damascus countryside, near the Lebanese border), launched from Lebanese territory.

In a statement to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the authority accused the Lebanese group Hezbollah of firing the shells toward Syrian army positions near Serghaya.

The authority added that it had detected Hezbollah reinforcements arriving at the Syrian-Lebanese border area, noting that it is monitoring and assessing the situation, maintaining communication with the Lebanese army, and studying appropriate options to “take the necessary measures,” without clarifying what those options might include.

The Operations Authority stressed that the Syrian army “will not tolerate any attack targeting Syria.”

The announcement came hours after remarks by Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, during a video conference meeting that brought together several Middle Eastern leaders.

During the meeting, al-Sharaa expressed support for the steps taken by the Lebanese government to distance Lebanon from escalation and prevent it from being drawn into the regional war between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other.

He also voiced support for Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in his efforts to disarm Hezbollah.

Israeli landing attempt near the Syrian border

On Monday, Hezbollah announced that it had clashed with Israeli forces that carried out a helicopter-borne landing in eastern Lebanon via the Syrian border.

The group said it had detected “about 15 helicopters belonging to the Israeli army approaching from the Syrian side,” adding that its fighters confronted both the helicopters and the infiltrating force using appropriate weapons.

Two Hezbollah sources, who requested anonymity, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the group shot down an Israeli helicopter in the area.

Earlier, Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported clashes in the al-Shaara area near the outskirts of al-Nabi Shayth in eastern Lebanon, where Israeli forces carried out a helicopter landing on the heights of the eastern mountain range near the Syrian-Lebanese border.

This marks the second Israeli landing attempt in the area within days. On Saturday, March 7, Israeli special forces conducted an operation in the al-Nabi Shayth area, accompanied by a series of airstrikes that killed 41 people, but failed to achieve their objective of finding the remains of Israeli pilot Ron Arad, who has been missing since 1986.

Lebanon’s al-Manar TV, affiliated with Hezbollah, previously reported that the Bekaa region in eastern Lebanon witnessed a landing attempt by Israeli forces coming from the Syrian border toward the eastern mountain range.

According to the channel, Hezbollah monitored four Israeli helicopters approaching from Syrian territory, which deployed an infantry unit at the triangle of the outskirts of Yahfoufa, al-Khraybeh, and Ma’raboun.

The infantry unit reportedly advanced toward the eastern neighborhood of al-Nabi Shayth (Al Shukr neighborhood). Upon reaching the town cemetery at around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night, Hezbollah fighters engaged the force.

Lebanon calls for banning Hezbollah’s weapons

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said that Hezbollah’s attack on Israel requires an immediate ban on all the group’s security and military activities, describing them as illegal and calling for its weapons to be handed over to the Lebanese state.

In a video statement on March 2, Salam said Hezbollah’s actions contradict the principle that decisions of war and peace must be exclusively in the hands of the Lebanese state, and conflict with efforts to keep Lebanon out of the regional war between Iran and Israel.

According to Salam, Hezbollah’s operation violates the decisions of the Lebanese cabinet and overrides the will of the majority of Lebanese citizens, undermining the credibility of the Lebanese state.

His remarks came after a Lebanese cabinet meeting to discuss the repercussions of Hezbollah’s strike on Israel and the Israeli response.

On March 2, Hezbollah entered the confrontation between Iran and Israel by launching rockets and drones toward southern Haifa in northern Israel.

The group said it targeted the Mishmar HaCarmel site south of Haifa, describing the attack as “revenge for the blood of Imam Khamenei and a defense of Lebanon and its people.”

In response, the Israeli army launched intensive airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs and areas in southern and eastern Lebanon.

An Israeli military spokesperson later confirmed that the army had begun a new wave of attacks on Lebanon, while the commander of Israel’s northern region said that “Hezbollah chose the Iranian regime over the Lebanese state and will pay a heavy price.”

Clashes between the two sides continue, amid reports of casualties and large waves of displacement in Lebanon due to the continuing war.
