buy from amazonWhen I was in grade school, I always looked forward to computer lab days. Back then (in the 1990s), not everyone had computers at home. So, we had a room full of computers that we only got to visit once every so often. Every class had to have their turn in the lab and most of the kids just wanted to play Where in the World in Carmen San Diego? (look it up kids). While I did my fair share of loving that game, the point is that we only got the game time when we finished our typing skills and other enrichment activities. For me, I loved the typing skills lessons because I got to use the classic mechanical keyboards. They were heavy. They were loud. But there was something almost comforting to me about them. And I think that is why I really lean into mechanical keyboards now.
I told this little anecdote so that you might understand my infatuation with the EPOMAKER G84 HE keyboard. It’s a high-performance 75% mechanical keyboard designed for both gamers and productivity enthusiasts. And, it feels very much like those computer lab keyboards of yesteryear.
Featuring a compact 84-key layout, the G84 HE combines versatility with precision through hot-swappable Hall Effect magnetic switches, ultra-fast actuation, and adjustable key response. The gasket-mounted case with multi-layer sound dampening provides a refined typing experience, while the double-shot PBT keycaps and customizable RGB lighting add style and durability.
With tri-mode connectivity plus a long-lasting battery, the G84 HE adapts effortlessly to desktops, laptops, and multi-device setups. Its powerful software allows for personalized key mapping, macros, and lighting effects, making it ideal for gamers, streamers, and anyone seeking a responsive and reliable keyboard with maximum flexibility.

User Experience
My workspace is a little different than some. I utilize two different MacBook Pros (one for work and one for personal) along with an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor, and my gaming rig. Connecting all the elements is a CalDigit TS4 dock. Because of this setup, I typically connect my keyboards with a USB-C cable so that I don’t have to swap wireless receivers or Bluetooth connections when I switch back and forth. Can it work? Yes, but I’ve found it’s more of a headache than just having a super cool coiled cable on my desk.
That said, I did try all three connection options. I thought they were all very responsive. The 2.4 Ghz receiver is stored underneath one of the feet on the keyboard. When you plug it into your computer (or dock), it is immediately recognized and you can start using the keyboard right away. The Bluetooth connection process was a little different than I’m used to. I’ve seen keyboards use 1/2/3 as the device options, but the G84 HE uses Q/W/E. What’s odd is that you are supposed to press FN + Q/W/E as a long press until you see the chosen key flash. Since your finger is on it, you can’t see it flash until you remove it. I watched my MacBook Pro’s Bluetooth menu until the keyboard appeared and then I removed my finger. The Q was flashing and I selected the keyboard in the Bluetooth settings.
Some of the other keyboard functions are more intuitive than the Bluetooth connections. To change the lighting effect brightness, you press FN + Up/Down and the backlight speed is FN + Left/Right. FN + Home turns all lighting effects off or on and FN + Backspace toggles through the different effects. EPOMAKER included a nice guide that includes all the key combinations.
I was very excited that EPOMAKER included macOS in their keyboard software. Unfortunately, it did not seem to work well for me. I was able to select keys, but when I tried to change their function, the default option stayed programmed to the keyboard. After I investigated the software for about 10 minutes, the keyboard stopped working. The lights were still going, but my computer wasn’t registering any key presses. I had to quit the app and unplug the keyboard for a few seconds. When I plugged it back in, it was working again.
One of the ways I test new keyboards is with a timed typing test using Monkeytype, which keeps the experience nearly distraction-free. My usual average typing speed is around 73 WPM, but with the G84 HE, I scored 79 WPM with 99% accuracy. The keys felt smooth and responsive, offering just the right amount of tactile feedback, while the gasket-mounted case and sound-dampening layers made typing quieter and more satisfying. The adjustable typing angles were easy to adapt to, and overall, the keyboard felt natural and comfortable even during longer typing or gaming sessions.
When it comes to the lighting effects, I thought they were very creative and looked great with the darker keyboard design. The only downside is that the lighting effects don’t get very bright.
Conclusion
The EPOMAKER G84 HE is a versatile 75% mechanical keyboard that blends nostalgia-inspired typing feel with modern features. It excels in comfort, responsiveness, and customization, making it suitable for both gaming and productivity. While the software for macOS could use improvement, the keyboard’s build quality, Hall Effect switches, and multi-mode connectivity make it a standout option in its price range.
