Outstanding no-bail warrant remains in effect in downtown fatal stabbing

A no-bail warrant for murder remains outstanding for a man who fled the downtown area following the stabbing death of a man in a hotel following an angry discussion about race.

Rene Frank Lunar, 44, was arrested on Sept. 3, 2025, in the slaying of Daniel James Stanley in the Golden West Hotel at 720 4th Avenue.

Lunar was released from jail days later, however, as the San Diego District Attorney’s office wanted more time to investigate the case before filing a charge against Lunar. This meant he had to be released, since no charges had been filed against him.

Stanley was reportedly heard by residents making derogatory comments towards Lunar.

An arrest warrant declaration says a resident of the hotel called police after Lunar and Stanley argued about Mexican and American flags. Stanley told Lunar, “This isn’t Mexico…. This is the USA.”

An on-site security guard and two neighbors broke up the fight, and both went to their rooms, according to the declaration.

Later, Stanley went into Lunar’s room and punched him in the face, according to Lunar, who told officers he went into the hallway and pushed Stanley away from him.

Lunar was later seen in the hallway brandishing a knife in his left hand and striking Stanley in the leg area. Stanley then fell to the ground, according to the video.

A resident said that she found Stanley, a Black man, face down on the second floor and bleeding.

He was rushed to a hospital for treatment of stab wounds to his femoral artery and elsewhere, but he died from his injuries.

A woman told police that Lunar said, “He has been messing with me all day, and that is what he deserved!”

Lunar quickly left, but he contacted the police at 10 p.m. and told the police the stabbing was in self-defense. He said Stanley was yelling, “go back to Mexico,” and yelling similar comments to him earlier.

Lunar told officers he dropped the knife in a trash can; it was later found by an officer. He then surrendered.

Court records show the DA’s office filed a murder charge against Lunar on Dec. 15, but by then Lunar was no longer staying at the Golden West Hotel and could not be located. On Jan. 2, San Diego Superior Court Judge Theodore Weathers issued a no-bail warrant for Lunar’s arrest.

He remains at large in March.

Lunar is 5’4″ and around 165 pounds. He has brown eyes, according to the warrant.
