Jon Sumrall has come to Gainesville with a laser focus to get Florida football back where it belongs, among the annual contenders for the SEC title and for the national championship.
In recent years, the Gators have fallen on hard times, and it culminated with the firing of Billy Napier last season and the arrival of Sumrall from Tulane. Sumrall is used to winning, carrying a 43-12 record as a head coach into his first season at UF after 2 years each at Troy and Tulane.
The 43-year-old Texas native has a plan, and he’s got the motivation in his first big-time head coaching job in college football to make things work. Did we mention that Sumrall is motivated to succeed? That has already been displayed to the fullest extent, and Sumrall revealed that his motivation to get it right quickly trickled into his home life with wife Ginny.
According to a social media post on Tuesday morning by Dylan Olive, who covers the Gators for SI, Sumrall and his wife had planned to head overseas during this spring break to celebrate their anniversary and Ginny’s birthday. It was going to be a romantic trip to Italy for those multiple special occasions.
Then fate got in the way, as Sumrall accepted the job at Florida. Things changed quickly and, well, that trip to Italy will apparently have to be taken another time with spring practice in full swing.
“I got too much sh*t to do,” Jon Sumrall said.
