ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Five students from Iroquois Middle School in West Irondequoit are being honored for raising over $2,500 for cancer research and people impacted by cancer.
The students, Sophia Borlik, Mya Cenzi, Jonas Stone, Londyn Cintron, and Raquel Curran, are all recipients of the Do the Right Thing award. They took part in the Stand-Up Project that fourth-grade teacher Jennifer Gottfried organized.
They chose their cause and decided to hold a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s as a fundraiser. The students said that this was about helping others, not the recognition.
“To me, it doesn’t really matter to be awarded. It just matters to me to do the good deeds,” one student said.
Mrs. Gottfried’s class is planning another fundraiser this year, scheduled for Sunday, June 14. You can learn about the Stand-Up Project here.
Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination for the Do the Right Thing award. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here.
