North Carolina House District 56 Rep. Allen Buansi is looking to make the jump to the state Senate in the wake of Graig Meyer’s resignation.
Buansi, whose House district covers his hometown Chapel Hill and Carrboro, launched his campaign Tuesday morning to vie for the appointment to Senate District 23, which covers Orange, Caswell and Person counties. The announcement comes after Meyer, who is a two-term state senator and 13-year veteran of the North Carolina legislature, shared Monday he will depart elected office to become executive director of the North Carolina Justice Center.
“People are hurting, and our district deserves leadership that is responsive and understands both the legislative process and the people behind the policies,” Buansi wrote in his announcement. “If entrusted with this office, I am ready to step in and continue the needed work of empowering people, strengthening our economy, supporting families and ensuring opportunity reaches every corner of this district.
“Service is about responsibility and responsiveness to the people,” he added. “I am ready to carry that responsibility forward.”
Buansi is a two-term member of the North Carolina House, having first been elected in 2022 to succeed Verla Insko and earning a comfortable re-election in 2024. A civil rights lawyer by trade, Buansi has deep roots in the community — having been raised in Chapel Hill and served a term on its town council. Once arriving in the state legislature, Buansi quickly became part of the House Democratic leadership team as chair of the House Democratic Freshman Caucus. He is currently Deputy Conference Chair and serves on the House Committees on Appropriations, Health, Higher Education and Elections.
During his time in office, Buansi has consistently voted along party lines on issues like expanding and maintaining Medicare and abortion access, while advocating for increased teacher pay and consistent state budgets. He also made news in by carrying forward a bill to add a Venus flytrap design as a specialty state license plate option, which benefits the North Carolina Botanical Gardens.
Meyer’s term in the Senate is set to expire at the end of 2026 — but the timing of his announcement also comes after running unopposed in the Democratic primary and ahead of the state legislature’s short session starting in April. Mid-term resignations are filled by the North Carolina governor, who will hear input from each county party in District 23. The local parties will elect committee members to review candidates and make a recommendation to Gov. Josh Stein, according to the Democratic Party’s process. The appointee will ultimately finish the unexpired term while appearing on the ballot in November against Republican and Caswell County resident Laura Pichardo.
If Buansi is selected, a similar process will have to take place for his House District 56 seat, where solely the Orange County Democratic Party would review and suggest candidates to the governor. The representative ran unopposed in March’s Democratic primary and is slated to face Libertarian candidate Matthew Clements on the general ballot in November.
“I want to thank Senator Meyer for his steadfast service to the people of Senate District 23,” Buansi wrote. “As I seek to fill the vacancy and transition my public service and leadership to the North Carolina Senate, I am committed to building upon his hard work and our shared goal of pushing for progressive policies to help all North Carolinians.”
Buansi’s opponent in the 2022 N.C. House District 56 race, Jonah Garson, also announced Tuesday he is seeking the appointment to N.C. Senate District 23. According to Meyer in an interview with 97.9 The Hill, additional candidates are expected to come forward in the coming days — with Meyer advocating for an appointment to be made before the state legislature begins its short session.
