Obviously it’s not regular season or postseason Major League Baseball, but the World Baseball Classic feels a heckuva lot more “real” than Spring Training games. So on a day when the Cubs were off, I was glad we got a Team USA-Mexico match-up in primetime …
Team USA held on to beat Team Mexico 5-3, and they stay undefeated in their pool: Alex Bregman had a walk in four plate appearances, and Pete Crow-Armstrong did not appear. Believe it or not, that’s the first time USA has beaten Mexico in the WBC in 20 years. Because a three-way tie atop the pool between USA, Mexico, and Team Italy is still possible, no one has yet clinched a spot from this group in the quarterfinal. USA and Italy (a team that is pretty loaded with MLB’ers) play tonight, and then Mexico and Italy play tomorrow night. Matthew Boyd was the other “starter” in the game after Paul Skenes – tough act to follow and such – and allowed Team Mexico’s three runs over his 2.1 innings of work. Two solo homers by Jarren Duran was most of the damage, and he left a jam for Griffin Jax to clean up. He threw 56 pitches, and hopefully otherwise felt fine, even if he may have been disappointed with his results. The velocity was up quite a bit, which is to be expected given the excitement of the moment (though, like I said yesterday, it does make you wonder a bit about Jameson Taillon’s velocity being down in his WBC start). Aaron Judge is feeling the WBC:No doubt about it off the bat of Aaron Judge ? pic.twitter.com/PGa7TtvSY1

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) March 10, 2026 I understand that you’re in Competition Mode, but it seems a bit much:Cal wouldn’t shake Randy’s hand. They’re teammate with Seattle pic.twitter.com/chSr4YgcyE
— Talkin' Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) March 10, 2026 Like, what, acknowledging your teammate with a fist bump is going somehow make you less successful against him? Really think about that. Because if it’s true, it sure isn’t very impressive. I’d be pretty disappointed if Cubs players were out there being hardos to their Cubs teammates – you can try to get the guy out and win the game, while also merely acknowledging the guy if he’s asking for it. It’s hard to tell if Randy Arozarena was joking around in his comments about the moment after the game, but it doesn’t seem like it:¡Randy Arozarena explota con Cal Raleigh! ⚾️????? pic.twitter.com/qhSDrKGMcC
— Luis Gilbert (@LuisGilbertLop) March 10, 2026 The translation:Here I translated it in case it helps. Yes he definitely seems serious pic.twitter.com/9RydYdt5mu
— Glenn (coughdrop.bsky.social) (@glennrolon) March 10, 2026 If Arozarena was even remotely serious there, it could make for a little bit of awkwardness in the Mariners’ clubhouse when the duo get back to Spring Training. Cal Raleigh seems like such a light-hearted guy otherwise (The Big Dumper literally got sponsored by a porta-potty company, so I don’t know how he possibly takes himself so seriously). Alex Bregman’s Spanish skills surprised his manager:USA manager Mark DeRosa didn't expect this from Bregman ??? pic.twitter.com/DL8POSBY0X
— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) March 9, 2026 No change of plans for Tarik Skubal after a couple days of re-deliberation:Tarik Skubal said he "totally misread how I would feel” pitching in the WBC, making his decision to leave even more difficult.“I just assumed it would be an All-Star Game type of vibe and it’s absolutely not. It couldn’t be farther from that." – t.co/QxmSZ0Zpw1
