With North Carolina Sen. Graig Meyer set to leave office at the end of the month, one of the first candidates is publicly throwing their hat into the ring for consideration.
North Carolina Democratic Party First Vice Chair Jonah Garson is launching a campaign to earn appointment to Meyer’s District 23 seat in the Senate and serve the remainder of its unexpired term representing Orange, Caswell and Person counties.
Meyer, who is a two-term state senator and 13-year veteran of the North Carolina legislature, announced on Monday he will resign from elected office to become executive director of the North Carolina Justice Center. With that resignation effective on Mar. 31, Garson — a Chapel Hill native and who practices with Parry Law, PLLC in town — is jumping at the chance to earn the support of the local Democratic parties and be nominated for the position.
“We are a state and country in crisis,” Garson wrote in his campaign announcement on Tuesday. “We need leaders right now who understand that the job of representing this Senate District is more than just being a consistent vote for progressive policy in a gerrymandered, MAGA-dominated legislature… We need legislators who have the strategic vision and statewide relationships to organize and win at the ballot box, in the field, and, as necessary, in the courtroom if we’re going to meet the moment.”
Garson was elected to his leadership role in the state Democratic Party alongside President Anderson Clayton in 2023 and has since helped oversee the party’s efforts electing candidates across North Carolina. That culminated in successfully recruiting candidates for all 170 North Carolina state legislative seats in 2025, after a 2024 cycle where Democrats gained ground in the state legislature and won statewide races like the governor, lieutenant governor, state superintendent, and state Supreme Court elections. The party also turned out significant numbers during North Carolina’s 2026 primaries last week.
While he has not personally served in public office — having lost a 2022 North Carolina House District 56 bid to current Rep. Allen Buansi — Garson previously worked for former N.C. Senate District 23 Senator Ellie Kinnaird, the late state Rep. Paul Luebke, and for the campaign of former N.C. House Speaker Joe Hackney. Since earning his law degree from Columbia University, the Chapel Hill native has more than 10 years of practice and currently serves as a state and federal court litigator for Parry. His portfolio includes representing legislators in voting rights and anti-gerrymandering cases, as well as helping businesses, individuals, nonprofits and state agencies in civil litigation.
Before becoming a state party leader, Garson also served locally as the Chair of the Orange County Democratic Party, a member of the Board of Visitors for UNC-Chapel Hill, and executive committee for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro chapter of the NAACP.
Because professional and political work has taken him all over the state, Garson said he believes that experience would help him fairly represent Caswell, Orange and Person counties in the state Senate despite the communities’ variety of needs.
“If you’re going to do this job right,” Garson said, “it looks like strategizing with a Caswell County farmer on Friday to win policies to fight farm loss and a Yanceyville resident about how to fix their failing water system… talking to Roxboro small business owners on Saturday about a data farm approved over massive public opposition… and working with UNC nursing faculty and staff on Sunday to coordinate emergency response to massive federal cuts to health programs and new threats to Medicaid expansion funding. Then raising money to flip seats Monday. And then working with legislative colleagues in session on Tuesday to uphold Governor Stein’s veto. All the while helping constituents get the local services they need to get by.”
In his announcement, Garson thanked Meyer for his leadership in the North Carolina House and Senate, and said he believes Meyer will do “great things” leading the Raleigh-based nonprofit.
“During his tenure in the legislature, Sen. Meyer has put in enormous amounts of energy into fighting for better policy from Raleigh and to rebuilding Democratic power across this state,” said Garson. “He brought creative, vocal leadership to the job of representing Caswell, Orange, and Person Counties. I am grateful for his friendship over the years, and for the work we’ve shared trying to make this state a place where everyone can live a good life and thrive.”
Meyer’s term in the Senate is set to expire at the end of 2026 — but the timing of his announcement also comes after running unopposed in the Democratic primary and ahead of the state legislature’s short session beginning in April. Mid-term resignations are filled by the North Carolina governor, who will hear input from each county party in District 23. The local parties will elect committee members to review candidates and make a recommendation to Gov. Josh Stein. The appointee will ultimately finish the unexpired term while appearing on the ballot in November against Republican and Caswell County resident Laura Pichardo.
