Dump cakes are one of those recipes that feel almost too easy to be taken seriously...until you actually make one. The recipe is only a few ingredients, you're not supposed to mix it, heck, you don't even use a bowl! But then an hour later, you've got a glorious sheet cake that's ready to impress. Sounds too good to be true, right? After testing and tasting plenty of from-scratch desserts over the years, I’ve learned that sometimes the simplest recipes deliver the biggest payoff (and bonus points for fewer dishes to wash). When this viral pineapple dump cake kept popping up on my social feeds, I decided it deserved a fair shot.
Like everyone else right now, I have been craving something bright and cheerful at the end of winter, and baking up something pineapple felt like a total shortcut to sunshine. There are plenty of versions of this cake online: some with nuts, some with extra spices, some that lean hard into the tropical theme, but I wanted to keep things classic. I went with the version from the blog Everyday Family Cooking, using crushed pineapple in juice and the same cake mix that ranked #1 in our boxed yellow cake taste test last year.
What I didn’t expect was just how good this cake would be. Moist but not soggy, sweet but not cloying and filled with little browned pockets of crunchy caramelized pineapple along the edges. Are you curious yet!? The best part: it was pan-to-plate in less than an hour! Here's how to make it.

Dump cakes get their name from the process, not the result. You quite literally "dump" the ingredients into a baking dish, usually without mixing and let the oven do the work.
There’s no creaming butter, no multiple bowls, no sifting and no stress. Despite the very unglamorous name, the finished product is typically somewhere between a cobbler and a cake, with a soft, fruit-filled base and a buttery, golden topping.

For this dump cake, you’ll need crushed pineapple in juice, unsalted butter, a boxed yellow cake mix, brown sugar and optional garnishes like shredded coconut or maraschino cherries if you want to lean into the whole tropical theme.
I kept things simple and resisted the urge to add nuts or spices this time around, though I can absolutely see the appeal for next time.

♬ original sound - Your Barefoot Neighbor - Your Barefoot NeighborFor this recipe, no. In fact, that’s key to its success. Using crushed pineapple in juice and keeping it all in the cake adds moisture and flavor.
I followed the directions from Everyday Family Cooking and didn’t drain it at all, which meant there was a lot of liquid going into the pan. At first, I was nervous about the amount of liquid, but a little voice told me to trust the process. That extra moisture is what keeps the cake incredibly soft and helps the edges caramelize as it bakes. It does mean a slightly longer bake time, but the payoff is totally worth it.

Then add the crushed pineapple, juice and all, and spread out evenly.

My Honest Thoughts About the Viral Pineapple Dump Cake

This cake surprised me. As I was making it (and even though I've made dump cakes before) I was thinking that there was no way this would turn out correctly. And sure, because there’s so much liquid, it takes a while to fully bake through, but the trade-off is nothing short of amazing. My house smelled incredible the entire time. When I pulled this baby out of the oven, it was golden yellow and caramelized around the edges with an aroma that transported me straight to a tropical island (for a second, at least).
The crunchy edges melded with the pineapple into something rich and jammy, while the center of the cake stayed pale yellow, moist and tender. It wasn’t overly sweet, which I appreciated, and the boxed yellow cake flavor definitely came through (Pillsbury, FTW!). It’s homey and unmistakably nostalgic with a tropical twist.
With a little shredded coconut and a maraschino cherry on top, it felt like a piña colada on a plate—bright, fruity and a very welcome pivot on a cold, grey, slushy winter day.

Plan on a longer bake time due to the extra liquid, and don’t panic if it still looks soft in the center at first—it will set as it cools. If you want added texture, some recipes call for chopped pecans or walnuts sprinkled on top. For serving, a dollop of whipped cream, a dusting of powdered sugar, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream takes this cake over the top.Up Next:
