Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa participated in a video conference meeting that brought together several Middle Eastern leaders, at the invitation of European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The meeting, held on Monday, 9 March, addressed the latest military developments in the region and ways to reduce escalation, in addition to supporting diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from widening.
In a speech during the meeting, al-Sharaa said that the current escalation, referring to the war against Iran, represents an existential threat to the entire region, warning of its economic and security repercussions.
He added that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, along with strikes targeting energy infrastructure in the Gulf, threatens global economic stability.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), al-Sharaa said that Syria, located at a geographic crossroads between three volatile fronts, is facing direct and serious repercussions as a result of these developments.
He stressed that Syria’s position has consistently condemned all forms of attacks targeting Arab sovereignty.
Al-Sharaa also criticized what he described as ongoing Iranian attempts to destabilize Arab capitals, saying interventions that undermine Arab national security are strongly condemned.
He added that Syria’s stability represents the cornerstone of stability in the Levant and the broader region.
Al-Sharaa noted that Damascus coordinated a joint position with several countries in the region, adding that Syrian authorities have reinforced the deployment of defensive forces along the borders as a precautionary measure. The aim is to prevent the repercussions of the conflict from spreading into Syrian territory, combat cross-border organizations, and prevent them from using Syrian territory.
He also expressed support for the steps taken by the governments of Iraq and Lebanon to keep escalation away from their countries and prevent slipping into conflict.
Al-Sharaa affirmed support for Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in his efforts to disarm “Hezbollah.”
Disarming “Hezbollah”
Al-Sharaa’s supportive stance toward the Lebanese president’s efforts to disarm “Hezbollah” comes as Aoun has proposed an initiative aimed at addressing the issue of weapons outside the framework of the state.
During the meeting, the Lebanese president also announced an initiative he said seeks to end renewed Israeli escalation against Lebanon. The initiative is based on four main points, according to the National News Agency.
The proposal includes establishing a full truce and halting all Israeli land, air, and sea attacks on Lebanon, alongside providing urgent logistical support to the Lebanese armed forces.
It also stipulates that these forces would take control of the latest areas of tension and confiscate weapons present there, including the disarmament of “Hezbollah,” its depots, and warehouses, according to the information available to official agencies.
In parallel, the initiative proposes launching negotiations between Lebanon and Israel under international sponsorship to reach an implementation mechanism for these provisions.
Aoun said that the direct cause of the current situation is an attempt to place Lebanon between aggression that does not respect the laws of war or international humanitarian law, and an armed group operating outside the framework of the state that does not consider Lebanon’s interests or the lives of its people.
He considered the launch of six rockets from Lebanese territory toward Israel at dawn on Monday, 2 March, to be an almost obvious trap targeting Lebanon, the Lebanese state, and the Lebanese people.
He added that these rockets did not constitute a decisive factor in the ongoing confrontation between the Iranian regime and Israel, nor between Israel and Lebanon, and did not provide any deterrence preventing Israel from responding to Lebanon.
Aoun said the incident may have been an attempt to lure the Israeli army into advancing into Lebanese territory, and possibly invading or occupying certain areas.
“Hezbollah” intervention alongside Iran
The escalation in Lebanon came after “Hezbollah” announced its entry into the war alongside Iran, in what it described as a “support front,” about 48 hours after the confrontation erupted between Israel and the United States on one side and Iran on the other.
This intervention was followed by a wide Israeli escalation that included intensive airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, causing a wave of displacement among residents, as bombardment continued targeting sites linked to the group.
In this context, an Israeli strike today, Monday, 9 March, targeted a branch of the al-Qard al-Hassan foundation affiliated with “Hezbollah” in the Ain al-Sikka area in Borj al-Barajneh in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The strike coincided with renewed warnings by the Israeli army for residents of the area to evacuate their homes.
At the same time, the field front witnessed further escalation with an attempted landing operation carried out by an Israeli force in the town of Nabi Sheet on the evening of Friday, 6 March. Reports indicated that military helicopters were spotted in the skies of the area before an infantry unit infiltrated the eastern neighborhood of the town.
“Hezbollah” said in a statement that its fighters clashed with the Israeli force in the cemetery area using light and medium weapons.
The clashes were accompanied by covering fire from armed local residents during the withdrawal of the force.
According to the statement, the Israeli air force carried out intensive aerial cover to secure the withdrawal of the infiltrating force, including around 40 airstrikes targeting the surroundings of the town and nearby areas.
The field escalation coincided with circulating information linking the landing attempt to the case of the missing Israeli pilot Ron Arad.
Israeli bombardment also extended to several towns in southern Lebanon, including Zawtar, Nabatieh al-Fawqa, and Arnoun, in addition to the towns of Ansar, Shaqra, Yater, Aita al-Shaab, and Maroun al-Ras, as part of an intensive air campaign targeting villages near the Litani River.
