GATES, N.Y. — Local first responders are proposing changes to the intersection at Howard and Buffalo roads, where a crash took place that killed 6-month-old Noah Carpenter.

Officials said an SUV crashed into another SUV stopped at a red light. Letters have been sent to Sen. Jeremy Cooney from Gates fire, ambulance, police, and the town requesting a turn light at the intersection. Gates Town Supervisor Cosmo Giunta said the town has been advocating for changes at this intersection for years.

“New York State DOT came through and, and that they’ve done some traffic studies, and it’s, they didn’t feel the need for this,” Giunta said.

In a letter to transportation chair Sen. Cooney, the DOT stated it conducted a review with crash analysis and evaluation of intersection delay but found no crash pattern that a left turn arrow would prevent. However, Rick Campoli, a 45-year resident of Gates, disagreed.

“I think they’re wrong. People are always getting blindsided trying to make that left turn,” Campoli said.

Police Chief Rob Long noted in a letter that there were 15 crashes with seven injuries at the intersection in 2023. He mentioned that these numbers only reflect reported crashes.

“The infrastructure’s there already. I mean, we only have turn signal turn lanes already there for, for, you know, corners there. Pedestrian traffic is already set up. The concrete slabs have been put there. It’s just a matter of I believe, just switching out the lights on and the two sides,” Giunta said.

Giunta referenced last week’s crash, emphasizing the town’s proactive approach to preventing future crashes. News10NBC reached out to the DOT for comment, but due to an ongoing investigation, it could not comment at this time.
